The agony of Hell's fires could torture me no more than what I now suffer. My dear husband asks that I do an unthinkable, sinful thing...

Letia de Burgh forced her thoughts to a dark corner of her mind. She must deal with more pressing worries now.

An army swarmed outside the walls of Seton Castle.

The faint light heralding the sun's rise revealed their leader, who kept well beyond the range of Seton's archers. Julian of Chatton was there as he had been every morning for a sennight. The gold and purple trappings on the massive destrier were so impressive it made the rider appear thin and insignificant.

"Why won't this Hell hound leave us at peace?"

Letia scowled and pounded her fist against her thigh. From the great height of the barbican guarding the castle's entrance, she signaled her archers to release a volley over the merlons. As Julian's warriors raised their shields, the high-flying arrows sang as if swarms of giant bees rained down on them. Amidst the heavy thumps of arrows striking shields, the cries of warriors split the air as arrowheads found soft flesh. She nodded, satisfied with her archers' aims.

"De Burgh! Raise the portcullis," Julian's gravelly voice bellowed. "I will enter. Seton belongs to me."

Before anyone could detect it was a woman who commanded such deadly arrows into their ranks, Warin's most trusted advisor Leofwan grasped Letia's shoulder to urge her back out of sight. "His greed knows no bounds. He hopes the strain of constant sieges will speed Baron de Burgh from this world," he muttered in disgust.

"My husband may be into his fiftieth year, but he still has the body of a strong warrior."

"Aye, Lady. But does he have the sound heart of one?" His face filled with sadness.

She ignored the question.

He knew the answer.

"This, this witless ass has no right to Seton!" She spluttered and thrust a finger toward the man below.

"Before his death, King Henry denied he was a royal bastard." She stopped pacing and snorted,

"Henry should know. He was quick enough to claim his true bastards. All twenty-four of them."

He grunted. "Aye. ' Tis what angered Julian the most."

Letia picked up her bow, drew an arrow from her quiver and stood behind a merlon. Peering out the embrasure to her left, she waited for a perfect shot. Impatient, her left hand flexed on her bow's grip, her right tapped the arrow against her leg.

Attired as a young warrior, she normally had no need to hide. But Julian's instincts were much like a lean wolf long deprived of a mate. Whenever she showed herself, his eyes narrowed and his nose twitched as if he sniffed the air.

"How I would love to send an arrow into his black heart!"

"Ah, Beloved. You are a fierce warrior on my behalf."

Hearing her husband's deep voice, Letia propped her bow and arrow against the stone merlon. As she turned, she tried to mask her fear for him with a cheerful expression.

Warin de Burgh leaned heavily on his squire's arm as he stepped through the upper doorway of the barbican tower. Straightening, he squared his shoulders. Despite his pale face, he looked as sturdy and vital as the massive oak tree on the knoll behind the army.

"My lord, surely you have not rested long enough." As she caressed his handsome cheek, liking the rough feel of his unshaven jaw, she noted the flash of pain in his blue eyes that he tried to hide with a wink.

"Long enough," he said with a reassuring smile. "Now, that nithing Julian must see me else he will grow overbold."

He turned to his squire waiting at his elbow, his master's helmet cradled in the crook of his arm. Taking it, Warin settled it over his long, dark-brown hair.

"The helmet will make me more readily visible. ' Tis a shame I have never favored a beard." He arched a dark brow at Letia. "Do you think it would have made my appearance more threatening?"

"You are fearful enough, my lord. The fool's knees would collapse if he had to meet you in open combat."

Letia smiled and studied her husband. Thankfully, the helmet hid the silver streaks that had grown wider at his temples this past fortnight. His blue eyes were sharp and alert, his nose straight - all but for that slight mark halfway down its length. His lips were firm and unyielding. Not like when he was alone with her. Then they were soft and tilted a bit at the corners.

Warin flashed a grin and nodded. "Let us send this whelp on his way."

At spaced intervals along the wall, slingers stood behind the archers at the same merlons. Beside them, piles of stones stood close to baskets of arrows. At Warin's signal, the archers released their arrows. While they speeded their way to their targets, the slingers sidestepped to the low embrasure to fire their slings. Using an underhand release, they fired their stones into the mass of warriors.

As the sun raced across the sky, Warin's face grew drawn and pinched, his movements slowed. Even so, he remained quick to take the measure of the enemy and direct his men to squelch any attempts to break into the castle.

Letia thanked the good Lord that Julian's men were inept at handling siege engines. For that matter, they were no more experienced at scaling ladders. Able warriors were scarce and Julian was far too stingy with his coins to hire experienced knights.

Her left arm and shoulder quivered with the strain of firing so many arrows. Though Julian ventured closer, she thought to resort to her sling instead. He thrust his fur-trimmed, green cloak back over his shoulders and removed his helmet as he waited in the midst of his favored men. A stiff breeze blew long, black hair from his face and snapped the cloak behind him.

Letia pictured the expression on his thin face. It would not be pleasant, for he had been surprised at Seton's skillful resistance. His brown eyes would be squinted in anger, his nostrils pinched and his lips pressed together.

She grinned, anticipating the special greeting she would lob toward that hated presence below. She signaled the two slingers to her left and to her right to load their sling with their special missile.

"It is time the sweet-smelling peacock prancing below has a bath!"

She swung her empty sling back and forth, accustoming the muscles of her right arm to their new position. She nodded to the lad waiting beside her. The squire had more mischief in one lone fingertip than most boys had in their whole body. It was he who suggested a fitting tribute for their enemy.

The clever squire positioned a missile in her sling's leather cradle, then stepped away giving her ample room. She nodded to the two grinning men on either side of her, rocking their own readied slings. She swung her own in short arcs then stepped up to the embrasure.

"A present, lout! Wear it in good health," she hollered.

With one quick swing of her arm backward, she slammed it forward. Her finger and thumb holding the knot of the release cord opened at the right moment, and her gift to Julian flew through the air.
She ducked behind the merlon, thwarting an arrow flying past her. After releasing their slings, the two men beside her also jumped back to safety. Letia peeked around the merlon and noted horses near bumping into each other and men shouting curses while they swiped their hands over their faces, their clothing.

She grinned. Never had she seen such a lovely sight. Only God could have guided their aims.

The curling hair Julian was so proud of, no longer floated in the breeze.

It dripped. Plastered to his head.

The young men in the barracks had happily contributed toward the squire's special weapon-three sheep bladders filled with piss and sewn closed.

Julian shook his sword at the barbican and took a deep breath to yell in a hoarse, precise voice, "When I find the lout who thought of this, I will lock him in a cage to swing from a hook on my barbican wall. He will be left to the elements and raptors till there is naught but gleaming bones!"

Truly, she could hardly blame him. He screeched again and all but foamed at the mouth, so agitated he could barely keep to his saddle.

His mount shied then bolted. The great stead galloped through the warriors, scattering them. It headed straight for the gap between his army and the castle walls bristling with warriors.

Letia watched in amazement as the horse reared, twisted its massive body and raced back over the uneven ground normally covered by the drawbridge. Seton's archers laughed so hard their aim was not as it should be. Fortunately, for the castle, unhappily for Julian, his body bristled with arrows enough to take him from the field.

She looked over her shoulder to grin at Warin. Instead, she caught her breath. Her wide smile fled as she clamped her lower lip between her teeth. Leofwan and the squire supported Warin as his knees buckled.

Lorraine took a deep breath as the silence between her and Leif lengthened. “I didn’t mean to berate your brother,” she said, inching closer to the stall gate that separated them. “Sometimes my loose tongue gets the best of me.”

Leif’s mind meandered over her choice of words. The subject of her tongue, and all the things it could do, clouded his brain. “No need to apologize. I enjoyed every blessed minute of it. Not many women can put Kristoff in his place.” He finished securing the throat latch on Freyja’s bridle and led her out of the stall. “Are you still ready to go on that ride with me?”

“Of course. Is this my horse for the day?”

“Indeed. Her name’s Freyja.”

“Isn’t that the name of a Norse goddess? Goddess of passionate love and fertility?”

“Impressive.”

“Freshman English lit teacher. He was a big fan of mythology.” Lorraine looked the horse over. “She’s beautiful.”

Leif watched as she reached out and pet the horse’s muzzle, her dainty fingers running smoothly over its forehead. For once, he was envious of his mare, wishing he could feel the soft stroke of her hand on his starved body. He didn’t care where. At this point, he’d take an innocent caress across his own forehead if it suited her.

He cleared his throat, trying to steer his thoughts to the plans ahead of them. “You hungry? I figured after we pay the good doc a visit, I’ll take you to Joe Watty’s and you can taste those famous fish ‘n chips I told you about—if you’re not opposed to eating lunch for breakfast.”

“I can eat anything, no matter what time of day it is,” she confessed. “But really, I’m fine. We don’t have to bother the doctor.”

“It’s not a bother. I promised you, and that’s what we’re doing.”

“Seriously, there’s no need. I’m much better now.”

Leif cocked his brow, his inner voice arguing against her. “And what if you get hurt on this horse today because your wits are still jumbled? I’d never forgive myself.”

“My wits are fine,” she stated soundly. “Test me if you don’t believe me.”

Leif’s mouth twitched in a grin, partial to the way she dared him. “All right,” he muttered, taking one step closer, his body inches from hers. “What day is it?” he asked, slowly leaning forward and tucking his nose just beneath her jaw. He took in a long breath, smelling the warm scent of her skin and letting his lips barely brush over her neck. To his surprise, she rattled off her answer with no hesitation.

“It’s Wednesday, June fifteenth, two thousand eleven, which means I have less than two days to figure out what I’m giving you for your birthday, if, in fact, the seventeenth is really the date of your birth.”

Leif pulled away and gazed into her eyes, taking in the clarity of their color. She stood before him confident, unwavering in her response. “Well done,” he said almost disappointed, though he hardly thought he could be as poised if she’d done the same to him. “But I’m still keeping my eye on you. One slip up and I’m dragging you to Dr. O’Donnell’s residence. By your hair, if I have to. Understand?”

“If you must.”

Leif liked her a lot. Everything about her made him crazy; her beautiful green eyes, her light airy scent, her feisty façade, her daring replies…every little thing enticed him to be brazen and bold. To forget his good manners and throw that cursed gentlemanly demeanor out the door.

Knowing better than to give into temptation, he fetched Thor from the other stall, the smell of her skin lingering all around him. Hell, if she smelled that divine, he knew she’d have to taste twice as good.

“You know,” Lorraine hummed dulcetly as she mounted, “for someone who’s supposed to have their wits about them, you sure act as if yours have slipped further than mine.”

Leif eyed her curiously. “What do you mean?”

She adjusted herself in the saddle and slipped her right foot in the stirrup without taking her eyes off him. “You never answered me.”

He mounted his horse in one swift motion, pondering her statement. “I don’t recall you ever asking me a question.”

“Technically, no, I never asked you a question. But I did make a statement that warranted a response. So, is your birthday really on the seventeenth, or is that just the day of the celebration?”

A slight chuckle escaped him as he trotted along side her. He tightened up on his reins, holding his anxious horse at bay. “My birthday is not the seventeenth. And no gifts are necessary.”

As Lorraine urged her horse forward and she cast a look over her shoulder. “Do I get to know the date of your birth?”

“That knowledge is usually saved for my closest friends. So, we’ll see how the day goes.”

With a grin that would light up the darkest night, she turned completely around in her saddle, her hand resting on Freyja’s rump. “Am I on a trial run or something?”

Leif returned the smile as he looked up to the sky, the weather appearing to cooperate with the plans he’d made. “Let’s just say you’re lucky I’m willing to overlook yesterday and start today on a clean slate.”

“Need I even ask how I’m doing thus far?”

Leif trotted forward, riding abreast of her. “So far, so good.”

She shrugged her shoulders as if mildly impressed. “I suppose that makes you just as fortunate that I feel the same.”

He reached over and grabbed her left hand, raising it out of respect. He locked eyes with her and bowed slightly. “I am fortunate.”

"If I was told I only had one word to describe The Fall of Rain (the entire Emerald Island Trilogy, for that matter), it would have to be "FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC!" This story deserves so much more than just a 5 star rating, in my opinion. Renee Vincent weaves a tale of everlasting love that transcends the boundaries of time, adding just the right twists and turns to keep you guessing. The Fall of Rain is the perfect ending, wrapping the entire trilogy up into one perfect package. I'm honestly sad that it's over. I'm eagerly awaiting to see what literary gem Vincent has in store for us next.

We rolled another full circle until clearing the bottommost step and stopped in a jumble of arms and legs.
The babe felt too soft. Too amazing. But I needed to get on with duty. I gazed down into her blue eyes.
"Let go of me, you bastard." She punched my shoulder.
Why do I want to hold on? Because she's the most beautiful woman. Ever. That's why. Mean as a pit bull, too. But exquisite, with perfectly chiseled features and those eyes are so big and helpless--until she squinted with malice.
She socked my cheek. "Curse you to bloody Hell. Let me go."
Maybe not helpless, by the fire burning the side of my face. A deserved punishment for my palms pressed into her lower back and ass. Like I needed to hold her to conceal her or shield her from these bastards because, inside the safety of the blister void, we could never be found. I released the sexy pit bull's iron little bottom and shoved onto my knees.
She scrambled away, to the edge of the curved translucent wall, in all her naked glory, scanning the bluish boundaries of the fairy armor, then clutched her arms over her breasts.
So much for perks from duty. But she had every right to protect herself. I can't hold that against her. "You're safe now, Sister." I'd rather call her Beautiful.
All the blood raced to my loin.
Beautiful pulled her knees to her chest, too.

"What do you mean? Who, by all that is sacred, are you?"

A man with a mission. And the Gods would find it humorous in sending me after an annoying redhead. Saucy redheads always made me rock hard. I shifted to crouch on my ankles and thrust my fingers through my short spiked hair. "I'm Cowboy. I've been sent to retrieve Aron MacKintosh."

"That's all they told you for orders?"

Women. "No. You don't need to know the rest." A lie never hurt when a man's pride is at stake. Besides, she's awfully rude seeing I just saved her fine bare ass.

"How am I supposed to believe you're not one of them?" She thrust her chin at the milling dupes.

And those geniuses kept charging through the void as if we aren't here.

They'd never us. "Do I look as stupid as them?"

The babe went slant-eyed. "If you're not with them, you'll give me your shirt."

Really? I stared into her insistent challenging gaze. Beautiful could play a mean hand of poker with those squared eyebrows. It couldn't hurt to soothe her anger though. "My shirt will make things better?"

"And your pants."

Beautiful must be kidding. But the gamble just might pay off. I could be trapped inside a blister void with a woman determined to escape or give her my pants. Gods, after the initial unobstructed view I got of her nude body, I'd be better off with those curves covered.

He's giving me his clothes? The blond man tossed his ammo belts over his head, tugged his black tank top from where it was tucked into the narrow waistband of his gray, black and white camouflage pants, yanked the stretchy fabric over his head, and extended the shirt to me.

No way. He isn't just going to give into my demands. Could the God-dess-Spirit have sent a Brother to my aid? I gulped and took the soft cotton.

The warm fabric felt wonderful against my bare breasts. But with the nidium shackles on, I can't stick my arms through the armholes. I can only tuck fabric under my armpits to cover some of my nudity. Good given I'm tired of being nude. A Brother would help a Sister. Like this man. And, his weapon appears to be fashioned from the God's metal--nidium, metal that slices through stone. A man wielding such a blade must be a Brother. Only Brothers had fairy-forged nidium blades--fey-forged edges capable of cutting fey-forged shackles. Like my chains. "Is that a nidium dirk?" If he replies yes, he's a Brother.

He nodded, unsheathed the huge glinting weapon, and cocked one of his blond eyebrows. "Shall I release you from those manacles?"

Gorgeous. He's cut from Gods' cloth. But can he be trusted any further than The Master's lackeys? "Don't touch me."

The curious arch to his brow softened.

As if he was pained I didn't trust him. But the Goddess knows how The Master's men poked and fondled me as I hung on the stairs for three bloody days. Can this man keep his hands to himself? That's the only way I'd believe he'd been sent to assist me. To help me escape. And, ultimately, escape involves losing the handcuffs.

His attentive gaze made me feel like I'm a hunk of meat. The cretin. Where's evidence of his sympathy now? I need to get out of here. Without the fetters, I can escape. Even him if necessary. I thrust the bloody cuffs beyond my knees and nodded.

The man carefully wriggled the tip of his blade beneath one bit of metal and pressed.

The back of the knife pushed fire into my raw skin. I winced, closing my eyes, to hide my need to run. Or scream.

"Sorry," he mumbled.

The restraint popped loose.

At long last. "Praise the God-dess-Spirit," I whispered.

The dirk wormed beneath the other choking nidium hobble sending fiery pins to sting my other wrist. I had to gnaw on my lip to stay quiet. The cuff popped free.

Och! To breathe freely again. Unencumbered by three days of stage time on the stairs. Naked. To a pack of bastads who willingly taunted me. But I beat them. Beat The Master. And I'll beat this man as well. I shook the accursed cuffs from my arms, grabbed the tank top, and jerked the shirt over my head.

The armholes gaped way below my breasts where the seam dipped. But the limited privacy the shirt offered far outweighed wearing nothing. But I need more. Something else to help hide what I couldn't protect all those days on the staircase. "Your pants."

His handsome stare melted into a scowl.

An amazing grimace. The man was tanned, muscled, and had a friendly look to him, like he smiled all the time. But he isn't smiling now. "Your pants."

He rose, unfolding overhead. Muscles bulged along his arms, traced out his ribs, and twitched along the unyielding line of his square jaw.

Is he struggling with cooperation? Goddess, is he going to hand over? What a chivalrous deed. No. No, I had demanded the gesture. There's no valor in his straight- lipped scowl. More like pure resentment.

He unbuttoned the fly, wriggled his hips, and shoved the pants down to his black combat boots. Then he straightened his shoulders to face me once again.

White boxers shorts? A man into comfort. But he didn't seem comfortable the way the white fabric of his shorts bulged straight outward at me like a female detector pointing toward the closest female. With all those muscles and the determination etched into his facial features, he certainly could have his way with weak little me. I'm no match for someone like him. He could pin me down in a heartbeat. Take what The Master wanted. I'd fail. No. I haven't failed. I held out, saved the timeline and my maidenhead. And the Gods had sent this Brother in exchange for my dutiful actions. At least, I hope he's my savior. I could be his captive. His kind actions might just be part of his plan to capture me. But I must believe in his weapon--an odd Brother's nidium blade. Since when do fairies award a brother anything other than a Celtic sword? What am I to believe? Can I trust him. I must. I have no choice with the dullards running willy nilly about the castle entrance in search of us. Aye. I will buy into this story of his. Time will reveal if he's my guardian or in cahoots with The Master.

He suddenly sat, untied his boots, and tugged the pants off. "You want them, honey, you've got them."

Dear Gods! He's giving me his pants too.

He tossed the camouflage pants.

The soft fabric hit my knees.

Pants. I can cover up everything.

He thrust a socked foot back into one of his boots and tugged on a long black lace.

If the twinkle in his blue eyes was anything but feigned amusement, I'd have flayed him with his pants. It's as if he wanted me to bend over. Cast him a fine show of parts no man would be seeing again anytime soon. But there's no time for tirades. He'd handed over. A lass would be a dolt for wasting an opportunity to clothe myself and escape whomever required escaping. I thrust both legs into the warm pant legs and drew the soft fabric up to my hips where I sat.

Concealed. Aye. At long last. Naught was like wearing clothing.

His interested gaze monitored my every move.

The pig. "Turn around," I growled.

He rose, planted his hands on his hips, turned his broad back to me, and sighed, loudly.

As if he couldn't believe I snarled after he gave me his pants. I shot to my feet, fingers fumbling for the buttons to secure the baggy pants around my waist, all the while studying his wide muscled shoulders.

The muscled man looked quite silly in knee-high sweat socks, combat boots, and white boxers.

"Have you finished, honey?" he droned.

Not with his attitude. He needed a lesson in manners. "Give me your under shorts."

He whirled, eyes half shuttered, and took a step toward me. The air grew tight, pressing against my body. His blue gaze dropped down to within two inches of mine.

Gods, he's glorious. All muscle and sinew. Deadly.

A warm almost tingly sensation shimmied through me.

Who is he? Really? Friend or foe?

Morganna save me from his seriously severe focus. And the three freckles on his nose. Three's a lucky number, universe. Luck born out of grave conditions. Maybe I'm wrong to be cautious about him. Maybe I should trust him.

"You get the shorts, honey, and you get everything else. Comprendes?" he snarled his warning.

So much for three.

The woman pushed lacy fern fronds aside to crouch at the river's edge. Strengthening sunlight cast her green gown with a brown hue. The outer greenish layer hung over the undergarment of dingy white. A tingle tickled through my body.

Was this a fever soon to break into a contagious rash. Humans were such sickly creatures. Oh how immortality had so many advantages.

"You couldn't know." She wiped her brow and turned back to the water.

What?

Sorrow squeezed my heart.

Brutally. Consuming every cell in my being. Hers is such a humbled stance too. Why the emotion and body language? I studdied her scabbed wrists, crossed as if they were still bound, skimming my gaze along her arm, up to her finely carved profile.

What is she thinking? I doubted she could hide any emotion from me. Yet, my sensory powers aren't permitted to actually read minds. Praise the Gods for that favor, or I would have gone mad centuries ago. "What can I not know, Solas?"

She stared at the calming water's surface.

A good thing, I suppose.

"I couldn't decide whether to poison Bishop Russel or myself," she blurted matter-of-factly.

Pain jabbed me behind the eye.

With such a heartfelt confession filled with intense pain, she deserved her own star of hope. I would gift her Wee Pix if the cursed fey returned for another round of cajoling.

Solas turned a remorseful gaze to lock on mine. "But I couldn't decide who deserved to die most."

Suicide? The same decision I'd just made for myself. Life. The ultimate madness. And Time did not heal all wounds. Had nothing changed by the date of my creation? How is a dragon to witness so much misery?

Or live it?

Katie had to stop reacting. Trick the Seer. If she didn't look though, she won't react to the spirit. I grabbed the blonde's stiff shoulders and crushed her gaze into my chest. "There's naught there, lass."

Katie squirmed, the hardness of her head fighting my grip. "He's got a knife."

And that would matter? I scanned the doorway for a person or a hint of a glinting dirk.

Why would I expect to suddenly see the apparition? The Seer had only come for Katie.

She stilled in my arms.

Yet, her thundering heart hammered. I could try to explain. Ease her fears. But a woman of her time isn't ready to believe in Post-Modern alchemical notions. Not with Truth hounding her in an astral projection.

The air warmed about us.

Probably more the heat from the fear in the chamber than an actual rise in temperature. But a rise in temperature would note the visitation's end. "Is he gone?" I scanned the doorway.

"I couldn't possibly know. I can't see," she droned into my shirt.

Of course she can't. But better to hang onto her with a spirit afoot given her reaction. I loosened my hold enough to permit her to peer over her shoulder.

Katie scanned the whole room where I held her.

Probably uncertain whether to sigh or grab a weapon.

"He's gone," she announced.

The other females descended upon us. Their three crowns bobbed beneath my chin as the other maidens's arms grabbed Katie.

"What was it?" Guinevere simpered.

"Yes, tell us what you saw," Pam commanded.

Out of the three, the masculine maiden had the most sensible way about her. All business. Very much a Brother in behavior.

"A large man in big black boots," Katie gasped. "He laughed at us, shaking a knife over his shoulder. He was going to kill us."

"I didn't see him," Guinevere finally managed to speak plainly.

As if any of us had. "None of us did." I maintained my hold on the frightened blonde maiden.

Katie shot me a bitter scowl.

Not good. Her pinched glare of betrayal isn't the prize I expected. I'd have to salvage the little friendship we had, to gain access to her uncle's foundry. "I'm not saying you didn't, lass."

"Hello, castle filled with lunatics."

The way the hearth's firelight cast shadows on the portraiture hanging along the dark staircase in the entry hall reminded me of Gothic tales. Talk about irony. My life…So much for giving up waiting. I walked right into this nightmare as the stupid virgin. And the whole place smelled of carcinogenic tobacco.

All the better to kill you with, Twila Deeds.

Scotty eased around me and smiled like a gloating demon. "This way, Miss Deeds. Murdoch is in the library."

So, the library houses the head demon? "Let's get this over with." I followed Scotty's flapping kilt.

The large man slowed to walk beside me through a gloomy passageway beneath the stairs. Lucky me. The alert and straining muscles on this captor only warned I shouldn't run now.

"Your brother's a remarkable lad," Scotty said.

Right. I outgrew that delusion ages ago when he uttered his first words.

"You should be proud of him," Scotty continued. "He's done something nobody has ever done before."

Forget about men are from Mars and say as little as possible, Venus.

A line of light traced out a doorway's edge. Scotty opened the door. Bright light flooded the hallway.

I was led into a room encircled by floor-to-ceiling bookcases. A redhead who had to be Murdoch stood with his back to the door, scanning a row of books.

Short hair. No white walls. Where are the Feds when a girl needs them?

Murdoch beamed with a smile. "Och! At last, we meet the fair Twila Deeds." The large man strode over to tower beside me in his kilted ensemble.

What is the deal with these guys and kilts? "Nice to meet you. I need to see my brother. Then, I'll be headed home."

Murdoch almost winced.

"She thinks we're going to kill her," Abercrombie timbered behind me.

Killjoy. He deserved a glare. But noting Murdoch's reaction could reveal my future.

"Now, lass, we don't murder lasses." Murdoch patted my shoulder and nudged me toward a brown leather sofa and wing-backed chair. "You sit. We'll discuss what's transpired. You'll be delighted you came."

Sitting and discussing requires more waiting. I planted my heels in the marble floor and locked gazes with the head lunatic. "I've waited long enough. I didn't come here to sit around. If you've got something to say, do so."

He sighed thoughtfully. "Very well. You are now part of a time-traveling operation--thanks to your brother, who hacked into my un-hackable database."

"You're nuts."

What else needed to be said?

His smile straightened as he nodded. "You could have something there, lass." He exhaled. "I'm the resident mad scientist."

After the discussion on the plane, I shouldn't be surprised. Nope. Not a bit. Abercrombie has to be laughing. I swung my gaze toward him.

Scotty wore an encouraging mask. Abercrombie just seemed attentive.

Are any of these men for real? I locked a doubtful gaze upon Abercrombie. "You promised I could kill my brother before I was sacrificed." Hopefully, I sneered enough to convey my point that he lied.

Abercrombie's blue eyes slowly closed.

My colonial American historical romance, A Warrior for Christmas, is one of six American historical romances contributed by various Wild Rose Press authors in An American Rose Christmas anthology.

Reclaimed by his wealthy uncle, former Shawnee captive Corwin Whitfield finds life with his adopted people at an end and reluctantly enters the social world of 1764. His one aim is to run back to the colonial frontier at his first opportunity––until he meets Uncle Randolph’s ward, Dimity Scott.

An estate outside Philadelphia

Christmas Eve, at last, and Dimity thought Whitfield Place had never seemed more welcoming. Every candle holder and sconce glowed; the blazing hearths radiated orange-gold light. Fresh boughs, pine cones and red berries lined the mantles. Sprigs of holly decorated the windows. Garlands hung

above the doorways and wound down the banister of the stairs. Vases of magnolia and laurel stood on every available surface. The very air was fragrant with greenery.

“You’ll have us carting in whole trees next thing we know,” Mister Whitfield had teased her.

Dimity would’ve done, if she could, anything to further draw Corwin to the old house. Perhaps if he experienced Whitfield at its best he might truly want to stay on. Christmas was a glad, charitable time. Who could say what wondrous occurrences might unfold on this hallowed eve?

Even better than the sights were the savory scents wafting through Whitfield. Her mouth watered as she stood in the drawing room between Corwin and her guardian to greet their guests. She slid her eyes at the young man who looked particularly handsome in a new burgundy coat, laceedged cravat, and breeches made of the finest wool. She admired the fit, and the boots he’d insisted on wearing.

Dimity’s cerulean blue gown, cut away in front to reveal a flowered petticoat and beribboned stomacher, complimented his attire nicely. She hoped she did as well.

A footman served hot toddies to the guests to warm them after their chilly coach ride. Smiling figures lifted silver cups with white gloved fingers to enjoy the spiced butter rum. The elegant room swelled with the merry assembly, fast growing merrier. Servants had laid the ladies’ cloaks across

the bed in the guest chamber. Men’s hats and heavy outer coats were stored in another chamber and the guests refreshed themselves before appearing in the drawing room.

Geoffrey Owen arrived with his sister and Mister Johnson. A forest green coat and breeches had replaced the attorney’s somber wardrobe. Hortense was even more embellished with lace than usual and her hair powdered. Her berry-red lips never ceased to move as they approached. Geoffrey swept a bow to his hosts. “Mister Whitfield, Miss Scott, Mister Corwin Whitfield.”

Corwin tensed beside Dimity. “Sir,” he said, and bowed.

Her guardian did the same. Dimity curtsied to each one, murmuring their name in words she could not hear.

Mister Johnson beamed upon them. “Whitfield has never been more magnificent, nor you, my dear Miss Scott.”

“Indeed,” Geoffrey added, appraising her with a gleam in his brown eyes.

“I’m enraptured, Miss Scott!” Hortense’s mouth opened as wide as the Schuylkill River with each over-enunciated word. “Everyone’s come!”

Every household among their neighbors was represented from the elderly to young adults only recently introduced to formal society. Children did not attend social functions, though Dimity wished they did; she loved their exuberance. Mistress Stokes appeared in the doorway and signaled to her guardian. He gave a nod and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, shall we proceed to the dining room?”

The crowd of people paused with a sense of anticipation. Whitfield Place was renowned for its banquets and her guardian the wealthiest landowner among them. Geoffrey Owen extended his arm to Dimity. “Please allow me to escort the fairest lady present.”

Corwin bristled like an affronted dog. How could she politely extricate herself from Geoffrey?~

Set-up: Ah, the romance and strong attraction begin. Creed and Lauren race against one another. Here's their thoughts before the horse race and the events that happen during it.

Through the pounding heartbeat in Lauren’s ears she realized she wanted him, wanted him like she’d never wanted another. Damn, had she lost her mind? The man reeked danger and abandon, would take her body in the blink of an eye and, no... it wouldn’t be in the blink of an eye. It would be wild and crazy and passionate, all the things she’d yearned for, craved, in the dark solace of her dreams. Lord, how she wished she’d never laid eyes on the decadent man.

Brand’s calm voice pulled her from her tumultuous thoughts. “Time for that race, Lauren.” He rose and offered her his arm. “I’m placing my money on you.”

“I wouldn’t advise that.”

“You can beat Creed. Concentrate, and no matter how much you want to see if he’s about to run you over, don’t look back.”

She chewed on the inside of her cheek and nodded. “It’s going to take a miracle to win, isn’t it?”

“Miracles happen every day.” He brought his fingers to her face and brushed her cheek. “Ride like you rode against me today and you have a chance.”

An indefinable feeling snaked through Creed’s gut when Brand walked forward with Lauren. Anna pressed her voluptuous breasts into Creed's side and wished him luck, but he scarcely heard her words. Tired of Anna’s continual demands of late, the time had come for them to go separate ways. He’d known Anna for years, but only in the last several months had he succumbed to her fleshy curves. The woman had tried every wile known to female to rein him in, and all had failed. Although warm and eager, Anna had never held his interest for more than an hour or two. He realized now no woman had ever intrigued him like Lauren McCain.

He had tried to ignore the jolt of lust rushing through his veins when she watched him during the meal. It had taken all his reserve to act detached while she sat beside his brother flashing her cat-like eyes. He didn’t like the feelings she aroused in him. They left him sullen and edgy. Jesus, what in hell was wrong with him? He barely knew the she-cat with a tongue sharper than barbs.

Now, with every step she took toward him, the blood rushed to his groin. He wasn’t prepared for the vision she presented, the snug riding pants and filmy blouse. A dark brown ribbon held her hair at her nape and tumbled down her back in a veil of burnished copper. The color of those silky tresses reminded him of autumn leaves. Her eyes were brown and slanted up at the corners. Above them, her brows were perfect and articulated her mood with an arch or a downward slant. How had he missed that nuance when he committed to memory the other lovely features of her face?

Tall for a woman and thinner than smoke, he longed to run his hands down the small of her back, her perfect bottom and . . . hell, he had to stop thinking about fucking her all the time. He meant to beat her in the race, and beat her he would. Smiling to himself, he savored the thought of what it would be like to take her down a notch from her lofty perch. Only then would that smirk be wiped from her face—the I’m-better-than-you-sneer she loved to flaunt.

“Miss McCain, I hope you haven’t gorged yourself.” Inwardly, Creed smiled when color stained her cheeks. “I’d hate to see your mount weighted down for the final race.”

“Don’t worry about Adobe or me.” She spat the words and mounted. “We’re more than ready to leave you in our dust.”

The gold flecks in her eyes sparked. For a brief moment he forgot about the crowd and longed to yank her from the saddle and introduce her back to the dust she spoke of.

“To your success.” Creed raised his tankard of ale, downed it and set it on the ground near his feet.

He spoke to Mason as he swung a leg over the saddle, his words confident and bold. “Let’s be about it then.”

The crowd broke into rowdy whistles and then fell silent at Mason’s words. “On the count of three. One...two...three!”

The horses bolted at the retort of the pistol. Adobe and Creed’s black mare ran neck and neck to the opposite end of the field. Thick clumps of sod flew through the air from Adobe’s hooves as he sailed over the bundles in perfect sync with Creed’s mount. He dragged his gaze from her expert riding skills and concentrated on the race.

Someone obviously had warned her not to look over her shoulder. She rode low, close to the stallion’s mane her lush body one with the horse. The very air enveloping them groaned with a competitive edge he’d never felt before. The spitfire intended to beat him at any cost.

Although fleet of foot, his mare lacked size against the stallion. When they reached the bales at the far end of the field, his time had come to overtake her. Her stallion navigated the crazy-eight with ease, and so did the mare. His moment was at hand. As the mounts crossed over and headed for opposite sides, she dug her heels into Adobe’s side and drove him into the mare’s withers. His horse stumbled to her stifles, her frightened whinnies echoing through the air. Lauren pressed on without as much as a backward glance.

The mare found her footing and like her rider, rage spurned her onward. She made up for the precious lost seconds the reckless stunt had cost them, but not enough to charge over the finish line before the stallion.

The crowd went wild as the riders swept past them in a swirling haze of dust. Damn, the cheating bitch had won. Halting near the corral, Lauren dismounted and bolted from her mount.

Creed dogged her heels, so close, he saw her knees quake. “You cheated!” He advanced and poked an accusatory finger into her chest. “You could have killed me with that crazy stunt you pulled!”

She backed away, visibly shaken. “Whatever are you talking about? You lost, fair and square.”

He screamed so loud, she jumped. “Liar!”

“Your clumsy mount lost her footing and plowed into Adobe!” Their gazes locked, and in that infinitesimal moment, he lost pace with his breathing. “You, Creed Gatlin,” she said her voice quavering.

“Were bested by a mere woman so live with it.”

“You’re no woman.” He didn’t know if he wanted to ring her slender neck or toss her to the ground and slam into her until she admitted that she cheated. “You’re a spoiled little bitch!”

An audible gasp fell from her lips, brown eyes narrowed.

“You could never beat me fair and square and you know it.” He struggled to control his emotions. She’d beaten him in the race, albeit by cheating, but why did he sense she was beating him again now?

Her bottom lip trembled and he became aware of her childlike vulnerability, and his potent desire for her. The cutting remarks, the bold, confident persona were nothing more than a façade on her part. Her nearness sent his senses reeling―the scent of woman, horse and leather adding to the roaring chaos in his head. She stumbled on the words she tried to speak and tears filled her eyes.

“Leave, now,” he said. “Before I do something we’ll both regret.”

She raised her dainty chin and held his eyes for an eternity. Then her long lashes swept down across her cheeks before she bustled past him in a cloud of dust.

I was entertained, kept on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed just about every aspect of this book. The only draw back for me was when it ended, I wanted it to keep going and I think that is just about the biggest compliment you can get for a story. 5/5 for me. ~

The two men glared at each other with a mixture of rage and embarrassment before Gunnar strode off toward the firehouse. Pete waited until Joe’s brother got a block away before a smile crossed his lips. The smile didn’t last long. Joe wasn’t smiling when he entered her apartment.

“What the hell were you two bulls locking horns about? I’m not pleased with the bit I overheard.”

“You know what they say about eavesdroppers, Joe.”

“Shut up. How dare you give him the impression I’m sleeping with you.”

She acted annoyed, yet he caught her glancing at his crotch. Her clenched fists wavered. Was she trembling?

“If he hadn’t interrupted us, I might not have to lie.”

“Tread softly, Pete. I don’t plan to get hurt by you or any man.”

“Does this mean I’ll never visit the other side of your bedroom door again?”

She stood still, but her mouth gaped open. “Joe, I loved touching you and kissing you last night. It wasn’t about the sex. Please believe me. We both survived a horrible ordeal. The flames, the lightning strikes, and even the cold stream are things I’d rather not experience again for some time, but I am glad you were with me.”

She shivered at the memory his words evoked.

Josie or as Pete calls her Joe, is Pete's partner. They are both Paramedic-firefighters in a small college town. Joe is a smart young women a bit naive in some ways and a bit of a klutz at times. She is not your typical female, she likes her baggy uniform and likes to work out. She rarely wears make up or dress clothes. Growing up with 4 brothers can do that to a gal. She starts to fall for Pete and wants him to notice her, but she is not pretty like the girls he is known to associate with.

Pete yearns for Josie, but knows he is not the right man for her. He worries about his past and doesn't want to be tide down. He drinks to forget and ends up in trouble. As Pete tries to move their working relationship into something more, his past comes crashing into his life. He is afraid everything will come out and Joe will not want him or worse be afraid of him. Will Joe understand what happened 6 years ago?

I loved this book for a few reasons. These two characters are carried over from Nancy's other book Destiny's Mountain. It is not a series and are stand alone books. I was hoping to learn more about these 2 characters and glad this book came out.

Nancy's writing style is edgy, provocative and realistic. The fire and rescue scenes were spot on with her background as being an EMT and volunteer firefighter. The setting in New Hampshire and the small college town was perfect. I could picture myself along with the characters in the story. It is easy to picture the places that are mentioned in this book.

The story grabs you and won't let you go till the end. A fiery must read.

Welcome back! Time to share an excerpt from The Victorian’s Lure. Why not my favorite scene? That first moment when Dakota starts to ‘warm’ toward Leathan. This scene is not only domestic but gives you a taste of how she sees him as all things paranormal and also as a flesh and blood… Scotsman!

EXCERPT…

Leathan polished off the last bite of his eggs and pushed his plate away. “Let me out of here. I’ll get the dishes started.”

Dakota saw her escape. “Me too, I’ll help.”

Everyone moved, and they slid out. Leathan grabbed the pans while she opened the dishwasher. For a few minutes they worked together in perfect harmony while the others chatted at the table. She’d never had a live in boyfriend and surely had never spent enough time in the kitchen to share such a domestic scene with a man. The snow fell in heavy, penny-sized flakes beyond the window above the sink. An apple cinnamon scented candle flickered invitingly on the sill.

“Almost feels like we should have some Christmas music playing in the background, huh?” Leathan rinsed off a pan and put it in the washer.

Smiling, she put some plates in next to his pan. “I wouldn’t think folks like you celebrated Christmas.”

“Folks like me?” he said, amused. “I suppose you think we should only recognize Halloween.”

Dakota glanced at him, relieved to see a glint of humor in his eyes. “I’m sorry, I can’t picture you decorating a

Christmas tree and singing carols. I suppose that was narrow-minded of me.”

“Not at all.” He flashed his straight white teeth. “I definitely do not sing Christmas Carols. As for the tree, sure, why not?”

A small, unexpected thrill shot through her. It had almost felt like he was saying he’d be more than willing to decorate a tree alongside her. But of course, that hadn’t been what he said. He’d merely expressed he wasn’t above decorating a tree with anyone. Where was her mind going? She didn’t even decorate Christmas trees! At least she hadn’t in a very long time. Sell the idea of vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, creatures of the night, that’s what she did.

Nothing else.

Dakota kept washing dishware while he cleared the plates and silverware off the table. She rinsed a clump of silverware and leaned over at the exact moment he did. They tried to shove silverware into the same slot and their hands brushed.

“Sorry,” he said and shoved his bunch into the next slot.

With a shrug, she wedged the silverware into its holder and got busy cleaning the sink, all the while feeling incredibly hot. Had someone turned up the heat? Out of the corner of her eye she watched him return to the coffee maker and refill his mug. Sweatpants made the firm globes of his backside stand out in a way jeans never could. Was he wearing underwear? She went to swallow, choked instead. Coughing and sputtering, she held a hand over her mouth.

Turning, coffee mug in hand, Leathan arched one brow at her. “You okay?”

Nodding, Dakota continued to cough, convinced she must be turning thirteen shades of red. She grabbed a cup from the cupboard, filled it with water and gulped. At last, the tickle in her throat passed. Thankfully, no one made a big deal out of it but continued chatting. The last dish in, she filled the soap dispenser, shut the washer and turned it on.

“You like coffee?”

Leathan had approached so quietly she jumped but not before a nervous hiccup escaped. She covered her mouth with her palm, eyes round.

“Excuse me!” she mumbled into her hand.

His lips flattened in an obvious attempt not to laugh. “No problem. Maybe an anti-acid would be better?”

Dakota uncovered her mouth, bit the corner of her lip and hid a smile. So he did have a sense of humor after all. “I do like coffee…even better than anti-acids.”

Standing within inches, the smile he bestowed made her grasp the counter behind her. If she didn’t know better, she’d swear he must be the poster boy for the Scottish Highlands. Her mind drifted once more to the sight of his backside. Dakota couldn’t help but wonder if he’d ever worn a kilt. Did they even wear those there anymore? Probably not. As if she was into guys wearing skirts anyway…please.

“Like it light and sweet?” He asked.

“What?”

“Your coffee.”

Of course that’s what he meant. After all, no such thing as a light and sweet kilt! She chuckled.

He cocked his head. “You should laugh more often, Dakota,” he murmured, still standing close.

“I should?”

“Aye, lass.”

The way he said it─brogue soft and full of encouragement─made her find the counter with her other hand. Full support was needed. Lord. Only ten hours ago, no, two, she had found him obnoxious and overbearing.

Now she wasn’t so sure.

“Was I right about the coffee?” he asked.

Coffee? Right, light and sweet. “Yeah, how’d you know?”

His eyes fell to her lips. “Just a feeling.”

“Good feeling,” she said softly. The room faded away. Idle chatter vanished. She liked the sensual cut of his lower lip. The edges curved down a bit, as though he spent too much time frowning. His top lip was carved into strong slopes. She imagined running her tongue between his lips, tracing the smooth edges. Where had that thought come from?

When he leaned across to set his mug on the counter, he came so close she could smell a fresh, soapy spice burn from his skin. Or was that the candle? He was so tall, lips so close. If she only moved forward a fraction, closed the distance, would his lips taste as good as they looked?

Leathan’s eyes rose to hers. She knew as she gazed into their rich depths, he wanted the same. Blood rushed through her limbs, made her lips throb in anticipation. What harm could one little kiss do? Just to see.
