Excerpt from SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHTS ON by Brenda Whiteside ...

“When do you go back to Vegas?”

Carson hesitated. “In a day or two.”

“You sound rather vague.” And still allusive. What could be the big secret about this charity gig he couldn’t divulge?

“I have a few more things to find out. I’ll be out of here as soon as I get all my questions answered. It’s complicated.”

We’d reached the edge of my apartment complex.

“Carson, honestly, how complicated can a gig—”

Pulling me around, we stopped, facing each other. My head said run like hell, but my legs wouldn’t respond. Mushy from wine or Carson and moonlight. I couldn’t be sure which.

“Have lunch with me tomorrow, darlin’.” His fingers slipped from mine to gingerly brush along my forearm. The moonlight caught in his eyes. “Another hour of your time with a long lost friend?”

“Yes.” My voice went all husky and come-hither. I wanted to kick myself for being so easy.

“Good.” Grasping my hand again, he led me toward the door. “What’s the address of your office?”

I struggled to shake off the moon shadows and to remember where I worked. Once inside the building, I took a scrap of paper from my purse and wrote the address.

“I’ll walk you to your door and say goodnight,” he said, tucking the scrap of paper in his pocket.

“Unless you want to have me in for a goodnight drink.”

I didn’t answer. If he’d only known the extent of my uncertainty at that moment, a little persistence might have made me cave.

“Okay, then—” His mouth gaped.

I followed his bewildered look to my apartment door.

Yadkny - I'm glad. There is suspense but it is handled with a big dose of humor!

Here’s one scene from Brenda's book that will entice a person to read this spell-binding book:
"Believe me, Ive been sleeping with the lights on for..." A dot of red caught my attention. "I don't believe it!"
"What?" Abby joined me by the window. She scanned the street but obviously didn't see what I did. "What?"
"There." I pointed. "Beside the green house on the corner. See the red car?" We had a good overview of the street from the second floor. If we'd been ground level, the car would've been hidden. "She must've followed me here. This is getting ridiculous."
"Who is it?" Her eyes squinting, Abby tried to see the Mustang's occupant.
"A woman who lives in Wesley's apartment building." I stepped to the side, the coffee-brown drapes offering me a hiding place. I peeked around the drape's corded edge. "She's following me. I knew it!
"Why? Who is she?"
I pulled Abby over to me, talking in hushed tones, as if my stalker might overhear. Telling her the story of my morning encounter with Eva, harassed ex-cop-turned-private detective, gave me goose bumps.
"You spent the night with Wesley?" Abby's voice boomed. "Is this getting serious?"
"Abby, aren't you listening?" I tugged on her arm. "I'm being stalked!"
"Oh, you're being followed by a jealous woman."
"That's called stalking!"
The plot thickens, with a secret admirer, a redheaded stalker, and an eccentric millionaire that throws her on a dangerous path. A surprising ending will throw the readers. I am a fan of Brenda’s and am waiting for her next book patiently.
