The two men glared at each other with a mixture of rage and embarrassment before Gunnar strode off toward the firehouse. Pete waited until Joe’s brother got a block away before a smile crossed his lips. The smile didn’t last long. Joe wasn’t smiling when he entered her apartment.
“What the hell were you two bulls locking horns about? I’m not pleased with the bit I overheard.”
“You know what they say about eavesdroppers, Joe.”
“Shut up. How dare you give him the impression I’m sleeping with you.”
She acted annoyed, yet he caught her glancing at his crotch. Her clenched fists wavered. Was she trembling?
“If he hadn’t interrupted us, I might not have to lie.”
“Tread softly, Pete. I don’t plan to get hurt by you or any man.”
“Does this mean I’ll never visit the other side of your bedroom door again?”
She stood still, but her mouth gaped open. “Joe, I loved touching you and kissing you last night. It wasn’t about the sex. Please believe me. We both survived a horrible ordeal. The flames, the lightning strikes, and even the cold stream are things I’d rather not experience again for some time, but I am glad you were with me.”
She shivered at the memory his words evoked.
“Forgive me if I yearn for closeness with someone who shared my terror. I’m sorry if I got carried away. I never meant to embarrass you or cause trouble for you and your family.”
She stared at him, again. The lines of her face softened, and a thump of something hot and edgy pierced his heart.
“You’re very special to me,” he whispered.
Joe shook her head and gazed into eyes with…pity? He rubbed his swollen cheek and winced. He didn’t understand the raw emotion displayed in her eyes.
“I don’t know what to feel, but I enjoyed you touching me.”
“I’m glad. You deserve to be pleasured.”
“You can’t imagine the turmoil twisting my insides when I allowed your fingers to—”
“I think I understand because even before your brother interrupted us, I sensed your curiosity. I found it heart–warming.”
“Because I’m a prude?”
“No. Making love to me all night probably would’ve been beyond pleasurable, but I can tell. You won’t risk it.”
“Risk what?” she whispered.
“Your heart.”

I picked a good excerpt because it shows Josie's vulnerability working with a handsome partner who continues to call her 'Joe'...like one of the boys. Hope you liked it!

Awesome excerpt, Nancy! I enjoyed it!
Thanks, guys. The excerpt tells a bit about what is going on...and where this is heading. When you put two hard-headed Type A personalities in the same room, things heat up...especially when they are firefighters.
GONNA RUSH OUT AND GET ME A GIFT CARD SO I CAN BUY IT!!
