Excerpt from A CHRISTMAS BALL ...

If you go to my website http://www.emilybryan.com/A%20Christmas%20Ball.htm , you can read the first chapter of My Lady Below Stairs, which is my novella in A CHRISTMAS BALL. Since it’s available there, I thought I’d share a different excerpt here. Jane Tate is masquerading as her well-born half-sister at the ball. Ian, the well-muscled head groom who loves her doesn’t think much of the idea and ‘borrowed’ a suit of clothing from Lord Hartwell’s own wardrobe to crash the party.
EXCERPT

“I’m supposed to be accepting a proposal of marriage this night as Lady Sybil,” Jane said. “How would it look if I were found kissing someone else?”

“Like you’d been caught under the mistletoe.” Ian pointed upward to the clump of greenery Jane had missed. “A perfectly innocent situation. None can fault Lady Sybil for a bit of Christmas spirit.”
“But—”

“Besides,” Ian said as he tugged her closer. “What if my Lady Jane were offered a proposal this night for herself?”

She gasped a quick breath. Did he mean it? The soft gleam in his eyes said he did.

“I guess,” she said slowly, “it would depend on who was doing the offering.”

“Let me show you.”

His lips brushed hers, a teasing kiss. Then he covered her mouth with his. Jane’s lips parted and he accepted her welcome, sweeping in with his tongue.

Jane arched against him. His warmth penetrated the silk as if she were naked. Heat settled low in her belly and the strange dull ache she always felt when Ian kissed her began afresh. It was an odd sensation, a wanting, hollow feeling.

She was certain Ian could make it better, if she let him.

But she didn’t dare.
She pushed against his chest until he released her mouth, but Jane didn’t pull out of his arms. She laid her head against his chest and felt his heart pounding beneath her cheek.

“Why must everything be so hard?” she whispered.

“I don’t know, lass,” he said, stroking her spine. “But there are some things that come easily if we let them.”
Her body throbbed an ‘Amen.’

A group of gentlemen suddenly spilled out one of the doors from the ballroom, talking in low murmurs.

“Oh, no!” Jane spotted Lord Hartwell at the center of the moving circle. “If the marquess recognizes that suit of clothes you’re wearing, you’re done as a Christmas goose.”

Jane grabbed Ian’s shoulders and turned with him to face the tall windows. He slipped an arm around her waist and she leaned into him. Maybe if they stood still, Lord Hartwell and his entourage would overlook them. Jane held her breath until the last click of their heels on the hardwood faded in the distance.

“That’s it, Ian,” she hissed. “You must get out of those clothes right now.”

“I thought ye’d never ask,” he said with a chuckle. “Only if ye help me.”

“His lordship might come back at any moment.”

“Then we’d best hurry.”

Our SPOTLIGHT on Emily Bryan's 'A CHRISTMAS BALL' continues ...

A CHRISTMAS BALL has been blessed by some really terrific reviews. Here’s a sampling:
“Although the title of this anthology sounds terribly traditional, this diverse trio is anything but. From Emily Bryan's "My Lady Below Stairs," the story of a bastard servant girl called in to impersonate her missing aristocratic half-sister with results worthy of Shakespeare, to Ashley's "The Longest Night," in which a shapeshifting nobleman attempts to win the heart of the wary woman he loves while on the trail of a spy, to Alissa Johnson's "Traditions," the tale of an earl who sets out to woo one woman and falls for her intriguing companion instead, these light, entertaining romps are not typical holiday fare.

VERDICT-A unique anthology of Regency holiday novellas that are risqué and diverting, making for an intriguingly off-beat addition to the seasonal slate.” ~ Library Journal

"Three charming authors invite you to the Hartwell House holiday ball, where just about anything can happen - and does! - to the delight of readers who enjoy short, light, delicious love stories that encourage them to feel the pleasure of the season."—RT Book Reviews

"I thoroughly enjoyed each of these wonderful Regency romance stories. Each author has penned a tale that you will find yourself wishing were longer...each of these fine authors have more than done their job in this fantastic anthology." —Night Owl Romance

Note from Emily Bryan: While I appreciate every single review, the ones from readers really touch me. Here’s what someone identifying themselves as J. Still from Bradenton, FL posted on Amazon about
A CHRISTMAS BALL:

“I often buy Anthologies for one Author and usually the other stories included are not up to par. This is NOT the case with this book! I bought it for Jennifer Ashley's 4th installment of her Nvegarian series. Loved that story but thought Emily Bryan's story was even better. I will definitely be ordering more of her books. She made me laugh out loud, cry and thoroughly enjoy myself in 100 short pages but when the story was over I felt the story was well told and satisfying! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK for all 3 stories!”

And J. Still is not even related to me, I promise!

The SPOTLIGHT is on Emily Bryan!

First of all, thanks for having me here!

Now for the hardest thing I do as a writer—write about myself. If you want the official version, please visit my website
http://www.emilybryan.com/Bio.htm

Just remember, I write fiction for a living so take what you read with a grain of salt. (There is a little section on that page where I tell 9 true things about my life and one bald-faced lie. See if you can pick out the gollywhopper!)

I grew up in the Midwest, but always dreamed of exotic places. When I was in high school, we all had to write down our goals and put it in an envelope to be read many years later. One of my first goals was travel. I couldn’t wait to see more of the world. And I have. We’ve lived in 9 different states, 4 time zones. When I said I wanted to travel, I didn’t think I’d have to lug all my stuff with me!

I’ve had a checkered past. My work history includes being a (hold on tight!) professional opera singer, elementary teacher, choir director, homeschooling mom, realtor, and banker. In 2001, I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up—a writer.

A CHRISTMAS BALL is my 7th title and next June STROKE OF GENIUS comes out.

If I was having any more fun, it’d be illegal.

I love to hear from readers. Please drop by my blog at
http://www.emilybryan.blogspot.com/. If you’re even mildly entertained by what you find on my blog, please sign up as a follower. I have 70 and would love to hit 100 by New Years!

Thanks for wasting some of your precious time with me!

The SPOTLIGHT is on "A Christmas Ball," and Contributing Author, Emily Bryan!

'TIS THE SEASON FOR SEDUCTION'

It is the most anticipated event of the ton: the annual holiday ball at Hartwell House. The music is elegant, the food exquisite, and the guest list absolutely exclusive. Some come looking for love. Some will do almost anything to avoid it. But everyone wants to be there. No matter what their desires, amid the swirling gowns and soft glow of candlelight, magic tends to happen. And one dance, one kiss, one night can shape a new destiny….

A CHRISTMAS BALL ~ 3 Regency-set novellas from Emily Bryan, Alissa Johnson and USA Today Bestseller Jennifer Ashley.

Q: Tell us, Emily, did you collaborate quite a bit with Jennifer Ashley and Alissa Johnson for your trio of novellas in A Christmas Ball?

Emily: None of our stories are connected except for the fact that all our characters attend the same Christmas Ball given by Lord and Lady Hartwell.

But we did have to agree on a few things. Like the date (December 19, 1922), the floor plan for Harwell House (which we modeled on Spencer House, the home of Princess Diana's family in London) and the type of decorations, (no Christmas trees, but plenty of greenery including a "kissing bough").

If you’d like to learn more about how a Regency Christmas was celebrated, visit my website http://www.emilybryan.com/ and click on the decorative Christmas ball image. It’ll start you on a journey through 6 short bonus pages of food, fun, and festivities, all just as Jane Austen would have marked the 12 days of the Christmas season.
