EXCERPT

There was only one direction I could look and that was down the road where we had just come.  Now someone else was coming straight up the middle so that people scattered like chickens.  A young, unhelmeted Omani trooper was riding down that road on a fine long-legged gray horse, bawling in a voice which did not doubt its own authority.  Though I couldn’t hear the words, I knew what he was saying—troops were coming and he wanted the way cleared NOW.

I couldn’t clear the road.  I was chained in it and knew my peril.  There was a curve in that road and by the time they saw me, it would be too late.  My only hope was that Frado would unfasten the manacles and push me off the road and for a fraction of a second I actually thought he might do it, if only to avoid trouble with the Army.  He got free of a woman who had been throwing melons at his head when she ran for her life and came back beside me, but he was still in a fury and it was only to punch me in the face.

I heard the gray horse score the cobblestones, launching into a full charge. Sparks flew where his metal shoes beat on the stones as he came like evil incarnate, ears pinned and teeth bared, head snaking as he went straight for Frado.  Fat as he was, Frado could by no means get over the wall on my side of the street and started to trundle to the other side and, with that, the horse was on him.

He was obviously a well-trained cavalry mount and I thought the rider meant to let him savage his target.

But at the last moment the trooper swung his horse just enough to clear Frado, jerked his foot from the stirrup and kicked the slaver squarely in the back at a speed just under that of a battle charge.  The force was so great that it picked up that mountain of a man like a doll and deposited him face down near the opposite side of the street.

My vision had taken on the preternatural sharpness that precedes seeing nothing and I saw in heart-stopping detail the first of what seemed like a hundred horses coming around the curve at a fast canter.

If I had been in better condition, I would have wondered why a number like that was coming at such speed through a country at peace, but just then I was in no condition to care.  I lay there like something thrown on the midden heap.

That point man didn’t have the job, though, because he was slow or stupid.  I heard the noise of his horse coming back and saw a boy no older than myself with a shining mane of chestnut hair already dropping from his trotting mount and running towards me with the horse close behind.

With no time to spare, he clucked his horse over me in the position a war horse takes to shield a fallen rider, dropped the reins and threw himself on top of me.  He was protecting me with his body, arms curled over my head, pulling my face into his chest, so I saw little of what followed, but I heard it:  the tremendous din of all those horseshoes, riders cursing, horses snorting in surprise, and the squealing and kicking of the horse over top of us.

That boy was holding me like a lover and I could feel from his involuntary shudders that he was inches from death, but he never moved and neither did his horse.

The troopers didn’t want to kill their own man and horses listen to each other better than they do to us, so between the efforts of riders and the violence of the gray horse trying to save his rider the line shifted and passed and I was still alive.

Lela was sixteen years old and a virgin when she is sold into slavery by her father so that her brothers might live, and stay with the family. Her life is a constant cycle of rape, beatings, degradation, and misery.

For eight long years she fights her captors at every opportunity. She can’t accept their vile attentions and rebels every chance she gets. It’s not long before she’s up for sale again.Caius is a handsome man that takes notice of her and buys her for what he thinks will be a night of pleasure. Neither of them is expecting the feelings they develop for one another. Lela finds herself not wanting to ever be put on the auction block again.Miriam Newman’s tale of a young girl forced into slavery is heart wrenching. Her words force you to feel the pain, and anguish of her main character. You find yourself pulling for her to find happiness with Caius. The characters are strong, and vividly portrayed so that you feel you know what’s in their hearts and mind. It’s a story you won’t be able to walk away from once you start the first chapter. I’m definitely going to be looking for more of Ms. Newman’s writing in the future.

Heart of the Earth is a very touching story and made me cry more than once. Ms. Newman has written an epic novel of immeasurable proportions that has so many different factors in it, you will not know what to think. The only hang-up I had is that at times there is mention of past stories, things I could not understand because I did not read the first novel. The way I saw Tia struggle to fit in and at times rebel was so heartbreaking for me; she just wanted to belong. The way her character is portrayed as this brave woman fighting for her own freedom as well as that of her lands was such a beautiful picture of what one woman will go through for her children and people who don’t appreciate who she is. The tale has a span of many years, and we get to see Tia go from a headstrong unwilling bride, to a loving mother, a scorned woman, a strong woman, a resented mother, and finally a contented woman; this story is definitely a roller coaster ride full of emotional highs and lows that will have any reader saying, “You go girl!”

Coffee Time Romance & More

Miriam Newman has created a masterful tale in THE CHRONICLES OF ALCINIA 1: THE KING’S DAUGHTER, including a fabulous job of world building, character development, pathos and dialogue. Newman has created a world that resembles medieval Europe in time frame with cavalry, no electricity, etc. and gives enough information about countries and peoples to make them eminently believable.

Newman started her writing career as a poet, and it’s easy to tell from her descriptions why she consistently published her work. She has drawn complex characters that we get to know better as we peel back the layers of personality. I adored Tia from the moment she was introduced: a feisty, outspoken heroine. She has just enough humanity, loyalty and spirituality to balance out some of her high-born arrogance especially as the book progresses.

While romance plays an important role in this novel, it is not the main focus. The plot concentrates on Tia, her relationships, opinions, thoughts and experiences and how they shape her and the decisions she makes.

The book flows beautifully with enough war, political intrigue, slavery, strategy and relationships of all kinds to keep one turning pages. The tale has a haunting reality to it as well, and I found myself caught in the characters’ emotions and feelings more times than I can count. The book has a spiritual feel to it, not only because of the importance of Tia’s Goddess-worship to her but also because it touches in both heart and soul with its beauty and its pain. I can’t wait to read THE CHRONICLES OF ALCINIA 2: HEART OF THE EARTH.

As a reviewer, I’m not easily impressed. However, THE KING’S DAUGHTER by Miriam Newman is an above average other-world historical. The pacing and voice never waiver. The world building qualities, social and religious, were quite exceptional. If you only read one book this year, make it this one. You’ll be glad you did. It is well crafted. Both the book’s happiness and pathos will touch your heart.

THE KING’S DAUGHTER will give you everything you ever hoped to find in a historical account… skirmishes, torn emotions, delight and pathos, royal treachery, Blood Debt and revenge… and a life of opulence. Oh yes, I’m looking forward to the sequel.

THE KINGS DAUGHTER
Ms Newman has written a thrilling tale of love and battle. This is a whole world planned and laid out. I could draw a map from the descriptions of the lands and countries. During the sea voyage to Omani I could all but smell the salt on the air. I could easily believe that this happened, that the countries and people where real. The people are strong and vibrant with secondary characters adding more credibility to the story. I do not feel that I can do justice to such a wonderfully complex world in only four paragraphs, but I can say I am now eagerly awaiting the next book in this amazing series.

CONFESSIONS OF A CLEANING LADY
This is a delightful read. Witty. Sensitive. Provocative. You’ll love it!

Not too many books give that real tinkling sensation when one reads about faeries, but Confessions of a Cleaning Lady is a true delight. I loved the reaction of the faeries and the way they emit their expressions. They have feelings, too. Shawna is a breath of fresh air. She has been slammed with so much in her life but her strength keeps her going. I love her spirit and tenacity. She and Mal are the idea couple and their romance blooms beautifully. Miriam Newman whips up enchanting characters in this invigorating read that leaves this reader truly satisfied. She brings imagination to life.
