Our SPOTLIGHT on Kelley Heckart and CAT'S CURSE wraps up with an introduction to Book TWO in the Dark Goddess Trilogy- BELTAINE'S SONG!

Well, this is my last day. I want to thank the Chicks of Characterization, Andrea and Corrina, for having me as a guest on their awesome blog. I don't have a book trailer for Cat's Curse yet so I decided to share an excerpt from Beltaine's Song, Book Two: Dark Goddess Trilogy—soon to be released from Awe-Struck.

AND INTRODUCING- Book two in the Dark Goddess Trilogy- BELTAINE'S SONG~

BLURB~

For Aedan and Domelch, the arrival of spring means their unearthly foe sleeps, but spring heralds the sound of the harsh battle horn of enemy kings and traitorous allies, threatening to tear them apart.

For Gartnait, who grapples with his true destiny and the appearance of a maiden only he can see, spring brings with it the promise of new love and the thrilling sound of the battle horn, putting those he cares about in danger.

~Excerpt from Beltaine's Song:

She glanced at Aedan who appeared to be watching the bard, but she could tell by the tightness of his jaw that he really watched them. Aedan leaned over, whispering something to Malcolm, raising her suspicion.

The night wore on. Wine and mead flowed endlessly into cups, but Aedan and Malcolm did not drink much. She feared they meant to harm Galan. He could be unbearably impudent, but a part of her cared for him.

“Well, it seems I will sleep alone tonight,” Galan remarked, staring at her, his eyes reddened by too much wine.

Only a few people remained in the hall. Some had passed out long ago, asleep on benches or on the rushes.

She watched Galan leave the hall and Malcolm followed him. Her senses tingled of danger to her brother. Galan had dismissed his two guards earlier and appeared too drunk on wine spirits to defend himself in an attack.

Domelch stood, heading for the door.

“Where are ye going?” Aedan called.

“I know what you are planning.” She stared hard at him.

“And what would that be?”

“You have sent Malcolm to inflict harm on Galan.”

“Why would that bother ye?” Jealousy clouded his eyes. “He could use a sound scare.”

She ran out of the hall, looking for Galan. Not far from the entrance, Malcolm had him in a tight hold.

“Malcolm, release him immediately.”

Malcolm regarded her with a cool smile. “I take my orders from Aedan.”

Mordag appeared at Malcolm's side. “I take my orders from Domelch, and she said to release him.”

“Are ye going to fight me, lass?” Malcolm laughed.

Mordag advanced on him. “Aye, old man. I will fight ye.”

The two warriors locked gazes. Domelch sensed the passion between the two.

Aedan appeared. “Release him.”

Malcolm obeyed his king, letting go of Galan with a rough jerk.

Galan smoothed down his rumpled tunic, glancing from Malcolm to Aedan, giving them a fierce stare. “Your sense of hospitality is in sore need of improvement.”

“Ye are not one to speak of hospitality. Keep yer hands off my wife.”

“But she is my sister. What deviant thoughts you have, son of reivers,” Galan said, his voice mocking.

Aedan grabbed onto Galan's tunic with both hands, pulling him away from the others. Domelch followed, her heart leaping with fear.

“We both know that ye do not think of her as yer sister,” Aedan growled, keeping his hands gripped on Galan's tunic. “If I see ye touching my wife again, she will be the last female ye ever touch.”

“Aedan,” Domelch interjected, fearful Aedan might do something rash.

He let go of Galan and turned to Domelch, pressing his mouth close to her ear, his voice harsh with anger. “If ye want anything to do with the likes of him, then so be it, but I will not put up with his insolence any longer.”

Galan swayed on his feet, looking taken aback by Aedan's sudden attack.

“Mordag, see to it that my brother gets to his bed safely,” Domelch ordered, hurrying to catch up to Aedan.

“We need to discuss this.”

“Not now. I am tired.” Aedan kept walking at a fast pace up the path to their dun. The lamps lining the path flickered erratically as he passed them.

“Even if he remembers who I was before, that means nothing. I love you.” She panted, trying to keep up with his quick stride.

“I saw him touch ye under the table, and ye did not stop him.”

“I—I was shocked by his behavior and slow to react, that's all.”

“It is obvious that he is still obsessed with ye.” He quickened his pace.

“Aedan, please stop,” she said, struggling to keep up with his quick stride. “He was obsessed with Cardea. She no longer exists.”

He turned to look at her. “I am not so certain about that. Of late I see flickers of her inside of ye.

I saw her cold ruthlessness during Comran’s interrogation and in our bedchamber…”

She turned her head away from the flickering light, hoping the night would shield her eyes so she wouldn't reveal her struggle against her dark past. “You seem to have no objections in our bedchamber.”

He stopped. His hot breath warmed her cheek. “Tell me that ye feel nothing for him and I will let it go.”

“I—I feel only brotherly love for him.”

“He is not yer brother. Tell me ye feel nothing for him, for the man who kidnapped ye and...and forced himself on ye.”

She could not. She knew that she should hate Galan for he did all those terrible things to her, but…that part of her that she thought lost had enjoyed it. She didn't love him. She never did, but she did care for him for he had shown her kindness later when she needed help, when she had no one else to turn to.

“I thought as much.” His face looked frightening in the flickering light, his jaw set in anger.

“A part of me cares for him, but I have given up everything for you. I renounced my Goddess, betrayed Cailleach and accepted your Christian ways.”

“Ye were nothing but a demon. If anything, I saved ye.”

His arrogant tone enraged her. “You saved me? Ha. You were the one cursed living like a miserable hermit in the forest.”

“We were both cursed if I remember it correctly.”

“I was perfectly happy as I was.”

“I think not. Ye were a wretched soul until I came along.”

Anger rose inside of her, anger only Aedan could raise. The blood rushed to her face, ringing in her ears. “If you want me to hate you, then you have succeeded.” She turned to flee from him.
He grabbed her arm, pulling her back into his body. “Hate me, do ye?”

Her pulse raced and her body flushed from anger. “Yes.” She struggled against him, but the hardness of his male body aroused her and she felt his erection pressing against her. She wanted to feel nothing for him, her anger making her stubborn, but her body betrayed her, tingling in places she had no control over. She stopped struggling and submitted to his touch, falling limp in his arms.

“Yer body does not hate me,” he whispered, crushing his lips to her mouth, kissing her roughly.
Anger turned into passion. Her body burned with desire underneath his touch.

Cradling her in his strong arms, he carried her the rest of the way to their home. It had been a long time since she felt this aroused, her body tingling and aching for him.

He flung her on the bed, tearing off her dress and devouring her with kisses and caresses.

“Ye are mine,” he growled, plunging into her with a fury.

Excerpt from "CAT"S CURSE," by Kelley Heckart!

Welcome to excerpt day on Chicks of Characterization. Here is an excerpt from Cat's Curse when my hero and heroine first meet.

Excerpt from Cat's Curse:

The man started at her sudden words, turning toward her with the sword blade stopping just before the blade cut into Cardea's neck, the coldness of the iron striking a shudder in her. That was the second time in one night she almost lost her head to his sword blade.

“Why are ye following me?” Irritation filled his voice.

“You look like you need some help starting that fire.”

“I do not need yer help.” He stared at her. His brows knitted together, his eyes scrutinizing her. “A good Christian lass would not be out here all alone in the forest at night,” he remarked with a sneer.

Cardea’s mocking laughter filled the air.

“Do I amuse ye?” He peered at her, eyes narrowed in annoyance.

She found her courage again. “You presume much of me, but what about you? I can only imagine what dreadful act you committed to be banished into these dark-winged woods. Though I can assume your misdeeds had nothing to do with fire,” she smirked, crossing her arms and planting her feet firm to the ground.

“Ye lass, are a rude minion of the Devil himself.” His handsome face rippled with indignation.

“That I may be indeed.” She stared hard at him. His ranting recalled images of the hated Levite priests. A shudder tore through her body and rage fumed inside of her, threatening to rise. She flirted with the temptation to rip his neck open and drink him dry. No one would find his rotting corpse out this far in the forest. The beasts would clean the bones of all flesh. She did not understand why she held back, but her hesitation had something to do with the odd way this man stirred her senses.

He turned around and strode with great arrogance back to his fire pit, striking the blade with the flint rock in angry thrusts. After watching him for a few moments, she approached him.

“Do ye have more insults for me?”

“No. I just cannot stand to watch you make a mockery of fire starting.”

“I can start the fire,” he insisted, turning back to the fire pit.

She watched him struggle again with the stone and blade, trying not to laugh.

“Please, allow me to assist you. It is much too cold tonight to be without a warm fire.” She did not understand why she felt compelled to help him and reached for the dagger she carried on her belt. His cold blade touched her throat before she could blink. Three times now his blade touched her throat and she wondered if it were a portent. “I need my dagger to start your fire.”

He eyed her with suspicion, but withdrew his blade from her throat.

“Ye live alone?” he asked, giving her room to start the fire, but he did not sheath his sword.
“Yes.” She noticed how he bit back a derisive retort.

Cardea held the stone with the sharp edge facing the blade and struck the blade in one swift movement. A spark shot out and the dry peat began to smolder. She struck the blade one more time and a flame rose from the peat, sending out warmth.
“You have to strike the blade in one swift movement with the stone to create a spark. Rubbing it like you were doing only wears the stone down. And it is best to strike the blade with the sharpest edge of the stone.”

“I have a capable pair of eyes. I saw how ye did it.” The bitter tone of his voice revealed his irritation toward her.

“I did not intend to offend you.”

“Good night to ye.” He waited for her to leave the fire before sheathing his sword. Keeping his eyes on her, he stoked the flames.

She stepped toward him and he jumped up, moving away from her. “Do not touch me.” His eyes turned an angry shade of dark blue and an aura of torment surrounded him. “I wish to be left alone.”

Cardea bristled at his surliness, thinking him to be the most arrogant man she'd ever met. “I will take my leave of you now, but you are in my territory so I imagine we will see one another again whether you approve of it or not.” Fuming, she stomped away before he could respond to her announcement. She had even lost the desire to drink his blood. His behavior puzzled her for no man could resist her legendary beauty and charms, but she had noticed a small glimmer of desire in his eyes, leaving her awash in bittersweet feelings.
She wondered why she could not touch him and why he was filled with so much torment and rage. Such a man excited her because of the mystery shrouding his spirit. For once in her long life, she stayed away from a choice bite. Cardea crept through the forest, hunting, but could not take her mind off of the strange, handsome man.

See what people are saying about Author Kelley Heckart and CAT'S CURSE ...

Today is review day here on Chicks of Characterization. Here is what reviewers are saying about Cat's Curse.

Four books!

This is true dark ages stuff—the aftermath of Rome's occupation of Britain, and the growing influence of Christianity vs. the old pagan ways and gods. I love epic historical/high fantasy. Fae, Celt, vampire, curses—all rolled into one book. You truly are transported to a magical time and place…it's a wonderful escape book for anyone wanting to get away from it all and I would definitely recommend it.

Score: 4.50 / 5 - Reviewer Top Pick!
This amazing story is very refreshing in the current romance genre. The storyline had a bunch of twists and turns that kept my attention and intrigued me with anticipation. I so wanted to know the outcome of this unlikely romance. Many interesting characters and love triangles make for a refreshing story that is not as neatly tied up as most romance novels of today, but has managed to make me a fan of the author's style. I am eagerly looking forward to reading the next book (Beltaine's Song), Book Two in the Dark Goddess Trilogy, as I have become addicted to the strength, courage and real human facets of the characters in this saga. She's a vampire, he's a cursed warrior; can true love keep them together?
3.5 stars! This was a remarkable book to read. It has all the earmarks of an enduring romance: suspense, danger, misunderstandings, true love and great sex. At the same time, it also has the elements of a wonderful fantasy story. The author’s detailed descriptions in the book brings you into the land she’s created, a fascinating escape from the day to day drudgery of our lives. I’m looking forward to the next book of this wonderful trilogy.

4 Cups!
Cat’s Curse is a wonderful story full of spells, trust, betrayal, and for the two, unconditional love. I love how the subplots built up the main story. Every character is developed. The dialogue and action keeps the book fast paced… The action blends into the story and love scenes are sensuous instead of graphic, along with being very compelling. This well thought out story is a very easy to recommend historical. I look forward to more of this trilogy.

Let's get up close and personal with Author Kelley Heckart!

It's biography day today at the Chicks of Characterization blog. Here is a little bio from me. I don't want to bore anyone with too much detail, but pretty much all I do is write books or blog posts. Reading is also something I enjoy doing. I work as an editor for an e-publisher so pretty much everything I do is related to writing. I'm kind of a strange person because I am perfectly happy spending time alone at home. My husband is here sometimes and my dogs keep me company all the time, which probably keeps me from turning into a complete hermit. Sure, I'm online quite a bit, but that's not the same as socializing with real people. I saw this special once about serial killers and some of the traits to look for are an aversion to socializing and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I think I might have traits of a serial killer because I don't like to socialize and I have some OCD, but that's probably not what anyone wants to hear. LOL I should delete that last sentence. It's kind of funny though. Anyway, here is my 'serious' bio:

Kelley lives in Arizona with her husband and two dogs. Her lifelong passion for Celtic mythology and storytelling is the inspiration behind her novels featuring fierce warriors, bold women and otherworldly creatures. A psychic once told her she has an old soul and this comes across in her tales of long ago places. Armed with a vivid imagination, Kelley spends most of her time daydreaming and crafting tales filled with romance, conflict and magic. She can be found online at

Short Stories: The Enchanted Meadow (part of the In the Gloaming Anthology from Freya's Bower), A Winter Solstice Kiss (part of the Winter Kisses Anthology from Noble Romance)

Our SPOTLIGHT is on 'CAT'S CURSE' by Kelly Heckart...

Hi all,
I am pleased to be the spotlight author for this week. I didn't realize that the Chicks of Characterization loved everything Scotland. My latest release happens to be set in sixth century Scotland when it was known as Alba. Cat's Curse is the first book in my Dark Goddess trilogy, which revolves around an Irish clan, the elusive Picts, an ancient Greek vampire, more than one curse, an Irish myth and a vengeful goddess. I had so much fun doing the research for this trilogy.

Kelly Heckart~
An ancient vampire, an Irish warlord and a vengeful goddess…

Cardea, follower of the Great Goddess is cursed to live an eternity as a blood drinker. For centuries she has lived with hate hunting and feeding off humans. Now she finds herself at the end of a sword blade held by the most handsome and arrogant man she has ever met.

Aedan mac Gabrain, prince of Dal Riata and a Christian, trusts no one after suffering a curse that keeps him from touching any females or he will turn into a black cat like his brother. He especially distrusts this strange female who could be the one who cursed his clan since no one knows Cat Anna's true face.

Can two tortured souls find love while battling a dark goddess determined to destroy them
