Featured Today- TEMPTATION IN A KILT

By Victoria Roberts
Book #1
BAD BOYS OF THE HIGHLANDS SERIES

She’s on her way to safety...

It’s a sign of Lady Rosalia Armstrong’s desperation that
she’s seeking refuge in a place as rugged and challenging
as the Scottish Highlands. She doesn’t care about
hardship and discomfort, if only she can become master
of her own life. Laird Ciaran MacGregor, however, is
completely beyond her control…

He redefines dangerous…

Ciaran MacGregor knows it’s perilous to get
embroiled with a fiery Lowland lass, especially one as
headstrong as Rosalia. Having made a rash promise
to escort her all the way to Glengarry, now he’s stuck
with her, even though she challenges his legendary
prowess at every opportunity. When temptation
reaches its peak, he’ll be ready to show her who he
really is…on and off the battlefield.

EXCERPT:

Rosalia reached out and clutched Ciaran’s arm, immediately realizing her mistake. He felt like a rock underneath his tunic. She became aware of his strength and the warmth of his flesh. She lowered her gaze, but when she looked down, his kilt was parted and showed part of his muscular thigh. It was torture and the room was getting so warm.

Carried away by her own response, she failed to notice that he was still looking at her, waiting. She tingled as he spoke her name. Tenderly, his eyes melted into hers. She could not find her voice. She could barely breathe, and she hungered from the memory of his mouth upon hers. Praise the saints. What was the matter with her?

He leaned in close and whispered in her ear. "Lass, your eyes show me what ye are clearly thinking. I suggest ye remove your hand from my arm and your eyes from my kilt."

A glimpse into "AWAKEN THE HIGHLAND WARRIOR" by Anita Clenney...

He's had centuries to dream of her...

Mis-adventurous historian Bree Kirkland discovers a one hundred fifty year old warrior buried in a crypt behind her house. But Faelan, the warrior, isn’t dead. When this chauvinistic Scottish Warrior awakes, he has no choice but accept the help of this modern-day woman who’s rescued him, but she’s more fearsome than the demon trying to kill him. If he’s not careful, she’ll uncover every secret his clan has bled and died to protect.

*EXCERPT*

Caught up in her thoughts, she didn’t hear the noise until too late. Faelan stood next to the bed wearing nothing but his talisman and tattoos, his face set like the Grim Reaper. Bree jumped to her feet, heart racing, the necklace clenched in her hand.

“What are you doing?” he said, advancing on her.

She backed away. “I’m…my…the…” A kind of serenity enveloped her, in the middle of her guest room, facing the most frightening, most naked man she’d ever seen, a man who should be dead, who might have murdered someone behind her house, and who could even be a demon. She stiffened her shoulders, straightened her spine, and gave him her meanest glare. She was sick of it. Sick of the lies, the secrecy, the pretense. On both sides. If he was a demon, she’d rather fight him now.

“You know damn well I’m looking for the Book of Battles, and I hope to God you have it, because otherwise, it’s disappeared.”

“I have it,” he said, after a long, hard stare.

Bree put her hands on her hips. “Why did you steal it?”

“Steal it?” His face went from menacing to incredulous. “Steal it? Ye daft woman.” The brogue was thicker now and loud enough to wake the dead. “You’re the one who stole it!”

“Me? My grandmother had this book when I was a child.” Had he lost his mind, along with his pajamas? She waved her hand at his groin. “If you can’t keep that thing down, put on some clothes.”

He grabbed his jeans from the floor and jammed muscular legs into them, then jerked a shirt over his head.

“Tell. Me. Now,” he said, forming each word loud and harsh, “how you have my clan’s Book of Battles and what you did with the missing pages.”

“I told you, it belonged to my grandma, and I didn’t take the pages. I found it that way.”

“The book belongs to the Connor clan.”

“Well, I guess they lost it. Like you’ve lost your amnesia.”

Faelan’s jaw clenched, his fists clenched, she bet even his butt clenched. She was sure if she wasn’t a woman, he would’ve hit her. And she sure as heck would’ve hit him back.

“It wasn’t lost. It was stolen.” His lips thinned and his eyes blazed. “And now it ends up in your house. While you’re at it, explain who this is.” He jerked open the drawer next to his bed with enough force to turn it into toothpicks and thrust a sticky picture in her face.

“What did you do to my picture?”

“So you admit it’s you?”

“It’s not me, you arrogant dolt. It’s Isabel. My great-great-grandmother.”

He didn’t say anything, just stood there, glowering at her.

“I’ve fed you, clothed you, given you a bed, and you’re pretending you can’t remember who you are or where you came from, while I’m agonizing over whether I’ve rescued a warrior or a demon.” She balled her fists, digging the cross into her palm, and she wished she could punch him in the face. “I was starting to think you were a warrior, but now I’m not so sure.”

“How do you know about warriors?” he asked, his voice accusing.

“Grandma told me the story when I was a girl. I thought it was just make-believe.”

“Your grandmother?” He looked puzzled, but some of the anger left his face.

“I didn’t even remember the story until after I found you, then I discovered the book in the attic while you slept.” Bree didn’t mention the bizarre dream and her grandmother telling her to find the book, to help him, or how she’d smelled her grandmother’s lavender perfume when she woke. “The book’s amazing, and that last page, did you notice it’s in another language or some kind of code? I could make out only a word or two, but I’d give my entire Civil War collection to know what it says,” she said, forgetting for the moment how disgusted she was with him. “There are even dates of battles from the future.”

He stared at her like she’d channeled Satan. “You read the book?”

“Not all of it…yet.”

He scrubbed his hands over his faintly bearded chin. “This must be a test.”

“A test? What are you talking about?”

“None of this makes sense. How you found me. How your grandmother got my clan’s book, a book so sacred no one but the Keeper is allowed to read it.”

“You have a Keeper. Wait…you mean you haven’t read the book? Are you kidding?” He didn’t look like he was kidding. “I have no idea how Grandma got it. I saw her with it once. I thought it was her journal. That’s what I was searching for when I found Isabel’s. All the women in our family kept journals.” On her father’s side anyway.

Faelan looked from the picture to her and frowned. “I have to find out how she got it.”

“Does it matter? It’s safe now.”

“It matters. The book is life and death to our clan. ”

That explained why he was so uptight. “You can have it if you’ll drop the amnesia crap and tell me who you are and how you got inside the time vault.”

Faelan opened his mouth to speak, and the window behind him shattered. Before she could scream, Faelan had his arms around her and dove, flinging both of them onto the bed. His body covered hers, her head tucked safely against his chest, from accuser to protector in a second. He looked at the window, drew in a harsh breath, and lurched to his feet, pulling her with him. Bree heard an ungodly growl and glimpsed something tall and grey with yellow eyes as more pieces of the glass broke.

“Get to the attic. Now!” Faelan pushed her into the hall. “Lock the door and stay away from the windows.”

“Come with me,” she pleaded, gripping his arm.

His face looked like a relic carved from stone. He glanced back at the thing trying to get inside. “I can’t. Now go!”

Excerpt from "EMBRACE THE HIGHLAND WARRIOR"

Cody sighed. Might as well get it over with. He removed the shackles, returned them, and bent over her.

“Shay, wake up.”

Her eyes flew open. She planted both hands against his chest and shoved, knocking him on his back, then sprang on top of him. “How dare you handcuff me to a bed?” she yelled, punctuating each word with a shake that rattled his brain. He didn’t fight back. She had to get it out of her system, and he didn’t blame her. He’d be more than pissed if someone shackled him.

She landed a fist into his stomach, and the breath rushed out of him. Okay, enough was enough. He captured her hands and rolled, trapping her under him.

“Get off me, you oaf.”

“I’ll get off when you stop beating the snot out of me.”

She let out a war cry and lunged for his throat, teeth bared. Intrigued, he hesitated a second too long, and she sank her teeth into his neck. A jolt of desire shot straight to his groin. He’d never been one for the rough stuff, but damn! He pulled back before she could do more than leave a bruise. He trapped her legs with his and held her hands above her head, letting his full weight press her into the soft mattress. She still struggled but could move only enough to get him excited.

“I’m sorry, Shay. I had to do it. It was too dangerous to let you go traipsing through the woods. I had to keep you safe.”

“What if he was hiding in one of the other bedrooms and sneaked in here while I was handcuffed to the bed? You left me so I couldn’t even protect myself.”

“Lach heard him out in the woods, but that’s why I locked the door, just in case. If this guy had broken it down to get to you, you would’ve screamed, and I would’ve come running. I was never far from the house.” He’d heard every name she called him.

Her eyes still flashed fire, but her breath was steadier, and she kept glancing at his mouth. He thought that was a good thing. He wondered if she’d calmed enough not to hit him, because he should move. She had to notice the effect all the wiggling around was having on him. He felt her hips push against his, and he groaned. He relaxed his grip and lowered his head, letting his lips touch her chin. He kissed his way to her mouth, and she head butted him in the nose.

While the stars exploded in his head, she shoved him aside and bolted out the door. He jumped up and went after her as she pounded down the stairs. He caught up with her outside. She was swinging her purse like a whip, headed for the car.

“Where are you going?” he demanded.

“Get away from me.”

“You can’t leave.”

“Watch me.” She opened the door. “I’m tired of people hiding things from me. I thought you were going to stop. Now you’re handcuffing me to the bed.”

“I explained it to you.”

“Don’t touch me,” she said, jerking away when he grabbed her arm.

“You’re not leaving.”

Shay straightened her shoulders. “You can’t stop me.”

He grabbed her, tossed her over his shoulder, kicked the car door shut, and stomped up the steps.

“Put me down!” Shay kicked and twisted, cursing at him. He dumped her on her feet inside the door.

She blew her hair out of her face, and as soon as she could see, she threw a punch at his chin. He deflected it and grabbed her arm. “Stop hitting me.”

“How dare you throw me over your shoulder like some kind of caveman,” she spat, trying to wrench her arm free. It didn’t work, so she used her knee.

“Ah, not there.” Cody trapped her knee. “I made the mistake of letting you leave here nine years ago without listening to me. By God, I won’t do it again. You’ll listen if I have to sit on you,” he growled.

She drew back her other arm, and before she could throw the punch, he had her on the floor and was sitting astride her, pinning her wrists to the floor. She bucked and twisted, but he held her down. “We can do this all night if you want, but you’re going to listen to me this time.”

“Listen to more lies? You’re still hiding things from me. Like the fact that you have Nina’s entire house under surveillance. Like the fact that you’ve got a Bat Cave in your basement. Like the fact that you were in Scotland when the stalking started.”

“You think I’m your stalker?” he yelled. “Me! I’m trying to keep you alive. We’re all trying to keep you alive. That’s what the clan’s been doing your whole damned life, trying to keep you alive! And just like always, you’re making it hard as hell. Your father wasn’t a bloody spy, and that thing in your living room wasn’t a man!”

Find out what the CRITICS are saying about EMBRACE THE HIGHLAND WARRIOR ...

*Reviews for  Embrace the Highland Warrior*

"I just want to eat these Highland boys up with a spoon. If Anita Clenney had written them any sexier, I just might have a restraining order against me. The Connor Clan series combines my two favorite things, sexy Scottish warriors and the paranormal. Set in modern times, Embrace the Highland Warrior still has a very old world feel to it, maybe because the men are so dominant and protective. The ladies of the clan are just as protective however, and there are female warriors. It is a wonderful combination. Ms. Clenney mixes horror, tragedy, humor, love, forgiveness, redemption and just a wee bit of sweaty sex into a spellbinding and enthralling book. In a battle that spans the ages and the continents, the war between good and evil never dies. The evil that seeks Shay and those around her is stepping up it's game, and the winner has yet to be determined.

I think if there had been one more exciting element added to this book, it would have just exploded in my hands. This book is just filled with so many plot twist and surprises. I did talk to the characters in the book quite a bit, and made rude exclamations in several parts. I can't imagine trying to write such stubborn, headstrong characters. I am getting more and more involved as the series progresses, especially concerning a certain female warrior who likes to hit on other women's men. Shady, that is. If you haven't started this series yet, you MUST, before you get left behind. If you're already a fan, trust me, this book will slay you. You will not believe the progression. In a word... excellent." - Wendy Mitchell

“EMBRACE THE HIGHLAND WARRIOR was an amazing roller coaster of an adventure! Not to mention one heck of a romance. This is the second in Anita Clenney's series. As a lover of all things Highlander, this book fed my craving! From the beginning I was swept away into the life of Shay Logan...This was an action-packed adventure that kept me spinning on the same whirlwind that Shay and Cody had to have felt. It was one thing after another with barely time to breathe in between. The plot had so many twists and turns that I never knew what was going to hit next. In some stories this type of plot gets confusing but I thought that Ms. Clenney did an excellent job of keeping everything in line. It was very entertaining to watch Cody stumble his way through some things. Shay's conflicting emotions about her life and the things that she discovers was very genuine. There were some very real spots where I wanted to sit down and cry right along with her for all her losses. Another part of this book I loved was the other warriors. I absolutely adored Ronan and his mischievous ways. I am looking forward to seeing his story. I really loved how all the other characters played crucial roles to the story, yet didn't distract from it. For me, they were there, I was interested, yet they didn't overshadow the story of Cody and Shay. Ms. Clenney gave me just enough on the others that I will be back for more!” - FRESH FICTION

Embrace the Highland Warrior will take readers on a thrilling adventure with plenty of action, jealousy, demons, and warriors. Anita Clenney has blended paranormal, romance, and highlanders into an exciting, and hopefully long-running series. In Embrace the Highland Warrior, future story lines are put in place as characters appear more throughout the book, and I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.” - Book Savvy Babe

Let's see what people are saying about Helen Hollick and her books!!!

“Official” reviews in exalted magazines and newspapers are all very well, but I believe it is praise (or condemnation) from readers that is becoming more important. Especially with the world wide spread of the Internet and the rising power of various Blog Reviews. More and more readers are turning to the blogs, because they can trust the reviews – and because they can add their own comments. They can agree or disagree with a reviewer.

On the whole I have received some fantastic reviews for the Sea Witch Series. I have had a couple of not so pleasant ones as well, but at the risk of sounding churlish, these I have found to be somewhat unfair. One condemned Sea Witch because of the punctuation errors. This was an early edition that had been published as an uncorrected proof. Yes there were punctuation and typo errors, but even a self published author is limited to the hands of the printer/publisher. I did not realise that these uncorrected proofs had been “released” into the world.

To balance things, a mainstream publisher in the US several years ago (not Sourcebooks Inc!) published The Kingmaking. From an uncorrected proof copy. I gave up counting after 360 errors. The funniest was Arthur’s ‘bread-stubbled chin’ (beard-stubbled).

I have also had a couple of “bad” reviews from people who are obviously Johnny Depp lovers, and who resent any possible rival to Jack Sparrow. Which is so silly as “that Sparrer feller” as my Jesamiah calls him, is movie based. There really is no comparison.

But I will leave you to judge for yourself’ here is a selection of what Captain Jesamiah’s rapidly growing fan base is saying (and I include a couple from his enemies as well!)

~~
‘What is it about pirates? The freedom, and endless possibility for adventure just over the horizon or around the next headland. In fiction you can concentrate on the roguish charm and downplay the less savoury aspects (in your heroes anyway).

I loved Captain Blood (both the Flynn movie and the Sabatini book), and various other of Sabatini's adventures; also Burt Lancaster in The Crimson Pirate. Frank Yerby wrote a pretty dark pirate adventure The Golden Hawk (I think), and MM Kaye's Rory Frost in Trade Wind was a piratical rogue.

As for only teenage boys being interested in pirates, who do they think reads all those Historical Romances featuring pirates abducting or rescuing heiresses? And isn't Michael Crichton's Pirate Latitudes to be made into a movie by Spielberg? No interest there then.
Hope it leads more people to discover Jesamiah's charms.’

~~
‘I fell in love with Jesamiah from the first chapter and continued to fall throughout the entire book. What an amazing, complex character.’
~~
‘I am halfway through Sea Witch! And yes I ADORE your Jesamiah! And you certainly have a target audience with these novels, and it isn't teenage boys.’

~~~
‘I just wanted to pop you an email to let you know I'm LOVING Sea Witch. I recieved it 2 days ago and started reading it yesterday. I'm already half way through! (naughty me, I'm supposed to be finishing up edits on my third novel this week but I can't put it down) I really like your writing style, not overly wordy, perfect! You've an official fan in me! ‘
Sky Purington - author
~~~

‘I finished Pirate Code today, you have done something amazing, remarkable, created the best pirate in literature. Far more rounded and sexier a character then any others - sorry to admit it, but far sexier then CJS !!!! Jes is an adorable rogue, a larger then life character but he is all human, with a human's vulnerabilities and strengths. Thought you were a little coy about what happened with ‘Cesca LOL Final scene with the Kismet and Stefan was wonderful - I was screaming FILM!!!!!!!
A wonderful, beautifully written, full-blooded adventure. I loved it.’

~~~
‘I’ve just finished Bring It Close last night and hated to see it end! And what an ending!! Wow, Jesamiah’s father! What a surprise that was! The entire book was fascinating and Jesamiah is just such a bad boy, and so smart, and lucky, and sexy! I just love him and Tiola together! This 3rd installment to the series is just great and I don’t know what more to say other than it keeps you on the edge of your seat, laughing, crying, horrified (Blackbeard), and so very interested! I can see each chapter playing out as if I were actually there! Blackbeard was a horrid man! I can only imagine (actually I don’t want to) what it was like to be near the bugger! Thank you so much for such wonderful reading enjoyment! I am planning on re-reading Bring it Close again very soon as I am sure I will find something that I may have missed in the first go round. ‘
~~~
‘Just a quick email to say I'm still reading Sea Witch, and really, really
enjoying it. I'm finding it a beautiful book to read, it really flows and I love the journey around the various places. ‘
Suzanne McLeod author of the spellcrackers.com fantasy novels

~~~
‘A really, really FANTASTIC read - and I have already devoured the first part posted on your website - I can sense more sea ventures ahead!!! Can't wait for Spring 2007! Once again, I have been completely captivated and entertained. Thank you for such a brilliant story and such wonderful, colourful characters!’
~~~
‘Wow! What a fantastic ride! Lady, you are totally zeroed in on my story bone! What a great slab of words! What is the matter with the publishers in London? If the manuscript of SEA WITCH had crossed my desk, I would be throwing bags of gold your way. I want to sign on with Captain Acorne! When is the next one coming out? The future is yours! It's got to be! Ps one complaint--the story wasn't long enough.’

~~~
‘Your strengths are in developing characters. I LOVED to hate the horrible Dutchman. I expect I'll have to hate him throughout the next book too, eh? He provides such anxiety for us readers!! [And for Jesamiah too, I know!]. I find Jes to be such a complex person - no doubt your conversations with him are QUITE interesting! I think he's better looking than Johnny Depp, and I like him a lot more than Jack Sparrow [who I think is too "Disney" to be a 'real' man like Jes - even though he IS cute!].’
~~~
‘What I liked best about the whole book was your description - battles weren't boring, the love scenes weren't cheesy and I felt as though I could sail a boat myself after reading how they run aloft to furl the sails! You have written a book that is compelling and which stays with me - truly! I'll be driving around in my car randomly thinking of something I need to do and a scene will pop into my head. I couldn't put the book down, didn't want to finish and now that I have I want the next one! Keep writing! Tethys will only wait so long between snacks.... :)’

~~~
‘This story is close to your heart? I like the.... Wow, I can't think of the right words.... Ambiguity, I guess, I get to feel toward Jesamiah- you know what he is, a pirate, but you kinda like him anyway. He has more layers than his inspiration [Jack Sparrow] and makes a more complex character in some ways.It's rather bitter-sweet in a way - I'm not done yet and I'm at the point of teetering between hoping this all turns out like a romantic fantasy that ends " Happily ever after " and the one more likely to leave a mark. Keep that sense of having this story re-call memories of love lost. I felt their pain of a broken heart and each did what would be true to their own nature. Such a mix of realism and romanticism is an unusual recipe. It's compelling because of the enthusiasm and magic of discovering another time and place infused in this story. Thanks!’
~~~
‘I have fallen completely, madly in love with Jesamiah Acorne! I'm not finished with the book as yet but so far I love it! Thanks so much Helen! Jesamiah is one of the liveliest and endearing characters I've seen come along in a very long time! Congratulations!’

~~~
‘Oh, Helen, tell Jesamiah he is such a flirt and I mean that in a good way! He is so cute! (Tell him cute is a wonderful thing from a woman's point of view). I love the interaction between him and Tiola once he gets his strength back. They are so wonderful together and he is SUCH a charmer!’
~~~
‘I finished reading Sea Witch ! I want more Jes!! Helen, I loved it! Can't wait for the next one. How long does it take to write a book anyway?’

~~~
‘FINISHED IT......WOOHOOO. Helen....fantastic ending mate....but I want MORE... MORE.... MORE... What poor Jesamiah went through by his brother ...wow...Jesamiah didn't have the time to give him his due....but now I know the "blue ribbons" have at least three uses... Well done Jesamiah...Tiola was awesome...loved the supernatural aspect of her life and loves...wow. The crew...is just right. A good mixture of men who are loyal to the ship and the Captain....well done. Loved the connection between Tiola and the "Sea Witch" too....well written Helen. Gonna have to read it a few more times now....waiting for the sequel....sigh....’
~~~
‘I am half-way through your book and it is brilliant... (Later) I have now finished Sea Witch - honestly could not wait to read it in bed, sadly now finished the ending did not disappoint and waiting for following up. Lorna (Manager, The Epping Bookshop)’
~~~
‘Helen!! I wanted you to know I am DELIBERATELY reading PIRATE CODE as slow as humanly possible, but I am finding it extremely difficult. I just don't want the book to be over, because... well... it will KILL me till I get your next instalment!! ‘
~~~‘I am totally enthralled by your books, the characters are great, the story has so many twists! and Poor Jes!! I just wanna grab him up and give 'im a big ole hug! Poor blighter...he's so love struck. I have to say you have made me laugh out loud at his expense...so many times, people at work think I am nuts! I can't wait to see the next book!!’

~~~
‘I am about 100 pages into Bring It Close and it's great. I was worried not having read [the other two] for a while that I would forget what happened, but you have a wonderful way of tying in important events from the other books that jogged my memory so it was very easy to pick up where I left off. The style of the book is just as exciting as the other two.’
~~~
‘What can I say? Wow isn't strong enough! Helen thank you so much for creating that gorgeous rogue, Jesamiah. I'm in love with a pirate ha ha! Seriously: I was on edge before starting Bring It Close because I was worried that maybe my liking for Jesamiah had "gone off the boil". No worries. Bring It Close is as good as the other two - no, better! Is that possible???’

Sea Witch by Helen Hollick
http://www.bilgemunky.com/?s=Sea+Witch

‘In regards to her pirate novel Sea Witch, author Helen Hollick has only one noteworthy shortcoming – she seems to think she’s in competition with Pirates of the Caribbean. From occasional dialogue reminiscent of Jack Sparrow (was the word “savvy” uttered by a single pirate before Jack?) right down to the cover quote weighing the sexiness of Hollick’s pirate protagonist Jesamiah Acorne against Johnny Depp’s own swashbuckling personification, it’s clear that Ms. Hollick is quite aware of Pirates of the Caribbean’s popularity, and that she hopes her own works might be comparable. So let me set her mind at ease – no comparison is needed. Regardless of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise’s past and future successes and shortcomings (I’ve indeed made note of both), Sea Witch is a very worthy undertaking of its own, and needs not take back seat to any flick, no matter how trendy. > more …’
Bilgmunky.com was not so keen on the second novel, P{irate Code – but then he failed to realise the impact my Jesamiah had on the ladies! The reviewer received quite a counterblast from several Jesamiah fans.

And the * or ** star L reviews? Oh well, you can’t win them all!

My hopes for this book were up after reading the reviews here, but I must confess I was very disappointed. First of all, the plot is confusing. There is no clear line through the book. Second of all, the story is not deep. The characters are not well described, so their feelings and reactions do not seem natural to them. Oh, I did understand the love between the two main characters, but only because it was stated black on white, several times - it is simply not possible for me to feel this love the two characters apparently share. For me, a book is not good if I don't at least can feel sympathy for the main characters, and understand their line of action, and I certainly cannot with this book. Last, there's an enourmous mount of text used to describe certain more or less uncomfourtable events. An amount not balanced to the amount of text used to describe the characters. It seems unnecessary and wrong for the plot. So, to me this book is not an example of good writing, not even a good story. Furthermore, there were several errors in this version of the book, which is very disturbing. The only reason why I give this book two stars instead of one is that I actually came through it. I'm sorry for mistypes and grammatical errors in this review - English is not my main language.
[which may be why this reader did not understand the book. So is this a fair review? H.]

~~~
The book [Sea Witch]was published by Discovered Authors and printed by BookForce UK, and this, I suppose, is the problem. It doesn't look very professional, and I'm wondering if they edited it at all because the entire book contains a jumble of nearly incomprehensible sentences containing, random, haphazardly, placed, commas, or usually no commas at all and some sentences are run-ons and many have no subject or they have incorrect punctuation here are some examples that come from just a few pages close, together, and you can see what I mean I hope: "Mother was already in the next world, gone to God, except while she hanged the jeering mob had shouted that a woman who plunged a knife into the heart of her own husband was of the Devil's breeding and would burn in Hell." [page 11] "Her sight enhanced by her ability of Craft she needed no telescope to put to her eye." [page 14. She might not need a telescope, but she definitely needs a comma.] "Astern on the quarterdeck, stood their captain, smarter dressed than his crew, a buckram coat, white breeches; a red, feathered plume in his cocked hat." [page 14. Ah, there's the missing comma -- You gotta watch those sneaky fellas.] "The men, used to the incredible noise and the acrid stink, took no notice, began running in and re-loading with barely a pause." [page 17. Ms. Hollick has a habit of omitting conjunctions. I think she gets this from her friend and fellow author Sharon Kay Penman who writes excellent historical fiction (except for the lack of conjunctions) and who wrote a blurb for the cover of Sea Witch.] "He had a sudden urge to look at that child properly; spun on his heel and hurried up the companionway steps to the shattered chaos of the quarterdeck, claimed the telescope from beside the ship's compass, mercifully, both still intact. Extending the tube to its full length, was about to raise it to his eye when Malachias, his face covered in blood, called his name and distracted his attention." [I did not make that up -- it's on page 25] The entire book goes on with these awkward sentences (I flipped through to check). I'm betting that the story was interesting, but it was so laborious to read that it just was not fun. I'm so disappointed in this novel, but I do re
commend Ms. Hollick's historical fiction.
[ I contacted this reviewer and explained that the copy she had read was an uncorrected proof – and I apologised for the punctuation errors. I offered to send her a corrected copy. She never responded. H.]
But to finish on a good note:
I Loved this book. It was easy to read, wonderful to follow and took you on a great ride. The characters leap off the pages and right into your home. I caught myself being scared for them, crying for them, taking up their cause. It was a wonderful escape from the normalicies of life and into the world of Pirates and romance.. I highly recommend this book...
Our SPOTLIGHT is on Author Helen Hollick and the "Sea Witch Voyages"
Hello. I am author Helen Hollick. I live in London, England, with my husband Ron, adult daughter Kathy, and a variety of pets. I have eight adult novels published, and I’m half way through the ninth.
I write historical fiction and pirate-based adventure fantasy. If you liked the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and swashbuckling fun, the Sea Witch Voyages published by CallioPress are for you!
My “serious” historical fiction is published in the UK by CallioPress and Arrow Books (Random House) and in the US by Sourcebooks Inc.
These are:
The Kingmaking
Pendragon’s Banner
Shadow of the King
The “what might have really happened” story of King Arthur. There is no myth or magic in my books. No holy grail, knights in armour or turreted castles. No Lancelot or Merlin, just the down to earth gritty story of Arthur Pendragon, a warlord who has to fight heard to gain his kingdom, and even harder to keep it. At his side, Gwenhwyfar (the Welsh spelling of Guinevere) This is their story. Their life, love and laughter. Their tragedy and despair.
A Hollow Crown (UK title) The Forever Queen (US title)
Is the story of Emma, a Saxon Queen. Wife to two kings, mother of two more. You will probably be reading a lot more about Forever Queen next month, for it is published in the US by Sourcebooks in November and I am looking forward to an extensive Blog Tour.
This book is also to be translated and published in Turkey
Harold the King (UK title) I Am The Chosen King (US title)
1066 is probably the most famous date in English history – the Battle of Hastings. This is the story of the people and events that led to the battle which changed the tide of history forever.
I am also co-screenplay writer for the UK movie 1066 which is currently in development.
I am especially proud of my new UK CallioPress covers, recently re-designed for me by US freelance Graphics artist Cathy Helms of Avalon Graphics
http://www.avalongraphics.org/
Cathy’s ideas for my Pendragon’s Banner Trilogy were inspirational, simple, but evocative, giving an air of sumptuous luxury to a set of novels about the world’s most famous King.
The wonderful design for the Sea Witch Voyages have a superb ethereal and pirate feel to them. With detail that intrigues the prospective reader. Why is that pirate gripping prison bars while he forlornly watches a ship sail away? What is that blue ribbon doing in his hand? (Pirate code) For Bring It Close; who is the woman on the far bank of the river watching a ship come up out of the mist? On the back cover; why is that man holding his head, despairingly, in his hands?
And Sea Witch itself – the evocative image of a pirate and his beautiful ship – Sea Witch.
These covers will soon be published in the USA, but for now the original editions are available on Amazon.com
I initially wrote Sea Witch as a little light relief from the serious historical fiction: a bit of fun, and a chance to keep the main character alive at the end of the novel!
Johnny Depp’s wonderful portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow awoke within many of us that “young at heart” craving for escapism fantasy adventure. That first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean – the Curse of the Black Pearl inspired me to research the reality of the early eighteenth century and the Golden Age of Piracy. Sea Witch and my character, a charismatic rogue Jesamiah Acorne, is the result. I describe the Sea Witch Voyages as a cross between Bernard Cornwell’s Sharp series, Hornblower and Indiana Jones.
Sea Witch - Voyage One
Pirate Code - Voyage Two
Bring It Close - Voyage Three
Ripples In The Sand – Voyage Four (published spring 2011
Escaping the bullying of his elder half brother, from the age of fifteen Jesamiah Acorne has been a pirate with only two loves - his ship and his freedom. But his life is to change when he and his crewmates unsuccessfully attack a merchant ship off the coast of South Africa.
He is to meet Tiola Oldstagh an insignificant girl, or so he assumes - until she rescues him from a vicious attack, and almost certain death, by pirate hunters. And then he discovers what she really is; a healer, a midwife - and a white witch. Her name, an anagram of "all that is good."
Tiola and Jesamiah become lovers, but the wealthy Stefan van Overstratten, a Cape Town Dutchman, also wants Tiola as his wife and Jesamiah's jealous brother, Phillipe Mereno, is determined to seek revenge for resentments of the past, a stolen ship and the insult of being cuckolded in his own home.
When the call of the sea and an opportunity to commandeer a beautiful ship - the Sea Witch - is put in Jesamiah's path he must make a choice between his life as a pirate or his love for Tiola. He wants both, but Mereno and van Overstratten want him dead.
In trouble, imprisoned in the darkness and stench that is the lowest part of his brother's ship, can Tiola with her gift of Craft, and the aid of his loyal crew, save him?
Using all her skills Tiola must con
jure up a wind to rescue her lover, but first she must brave the darkness of the ocean depths and confront the supernatural being, Tethys, the Spirit of the Sea, an elemental who will stop at nothing to claim Jesamiah Acorne's soul and bones as a trophy.
Jesamiah Acorne, Captain of the Sea Witch, has received a pardon for his crimes of piracy; but is still unable to free his love Tiola Oldstagh from her unhappy mariage to Stefan van Overstratten. As a white witch Tiola has the means of saving herself but refuses to use her craft, so Jesamiah must think of a solution.
Jesamiah Acorne, Captain of the Sea Witch, has accepted a government-granted amnesty against his misdeeds of piracy, but old enemies do not forget the past. In particular Edward Teach - better known as Blackbeard - has a bone to pick with Acorne. Following an indiscretion with an old flame, Jesamiah finds his fiancée, the midwife and white witch Tiola Oldstagh, has gone to North Carolina to help with an imminent and difficult birth. The problem; that is where Blackbeard now resides.
He must not discover that Tiola is Jesamiah's woman, she will have to hide her identity and her gift of Craft from the black-hearted pirate who has sold his soul to the devil. With Sea Witch damaged and himself wounded by Blackbeard, Jesamiah has to take stock of his situation at his old home in Virginia - but trouble follows him like a ship's wake and he is arrested for acts of piracy on the High Seas.
Too much trouble has come too close! How is Jesamiah Acorne to clear his name, overturn a sentence of hanging, keep Tiola safe, put an end to Blackbeard and deal with being haunted by the ghost of his father? Bring It Close moves from the Bahamas to North Carolina and Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia at a swashbuckling pace. There is intrigue, misunderstandings, romance and adventure all wrapped up in a delightful blend of mystical fantasy.
